You may not be able to drink pool water but you can wash with it and flush your toilet with it.

You can make a smaller solar still, but it would be interesting to see a pool sized solar still. It would have to be huge and/or multiple collection points.

One thing to consider is survival skills, which will allow you to travel. One "solar still" that can be used is to put a clear plastic trash bag on a tree limb, cut the lower corner and put a rock there and collect the water. Use different trees and different limbs to not kill the tree or limb.

Disruption in the public water supply can be caused by all of those things mentioned above. Many agencies, particularly since 9/11, have put effort into hardening their facilities. For example, backup generators are somewhat common at pumping facilities. The water at the tap is likely gravity fed from a tank/reservoirs, so depending on the size of the storage water service may continue for some time without the need for power. That all assumes that water isn't hemorrhaging from a main somewhere. Every system is different, but if you call your water supplier they may give you the scoop on their system.

Actually since 9/11 its very unlikely any water supplier will give you the scoop on their system. Same goes for most utilities. I'm in the gas industry an we have mandatory training and exercises with homeland security, cops of all kinds, fire, ect. Water agencies have the same requuirements now too. We're all told not to give out system information.

I work for a District too and have no issue giving basic information. If someone wants to know what reservoir they're supplied from, and what would happen during a power outage, then they get that info. Most of the info is available online for anyone willing to spend time looking. Obviously, I wouldn't give out a set of plans for a reservoir or pump station, nor would I give any information (that wasn't obvious) on what I consider areas of weakness within the system.
