    2 questions

there is a member writing a zombie apocolype story in the OT section and from reading this i thought of 2 questions that dont know the answer to.

    1. Is swimming pool water able to be sterilized/potable for drinking water by boiling it?

    2. what can cause a disruption in the city water supply? so when i turn on my faucet water will not come out? is it all passive or is it contolled somehow.

Sorry is these are Noob questions.

    Thanks

Get a 100+ gallon water heater, it. An be easily drained, and remains when service stops

Water supply can be disrupted very easily. Burst in a pipe main, loss of power to the pumping station, lack of pressure for water flow.

Yeah, water gets shut off all the time for all kinds of reasons - most common being the ones mentioned above... burst water pipe, somethingwrong at the pumping station, etc. You'll still have access to the water already in the system (until the pressure goes)

also, if an event happens (hurricane, earthquake, etc) where you lose water, make sure to check sources around the home for an immediate supply - things like the tower of your toilets, and your hot water heater. All of those will have clean, drinkable water.

My question(s) to anybody would be...
Has anyone ever seen a zombie?
And why the hell are people worring about something nobodys seen, that will never be?

There is plenty of REAL things to be concerned about

              1. yes. I would filter it first. you can also add 15 drops of bleach per gallon. you can also set it in PTFE1 plastic bottles in the sun for 8 hours. I have a short time supply of bottled water, several months, my pool would be for long term storage. I can direct rain water into it if need be. keep lots of chlorine on had so it doesnt go green. the chlorine can evaporate out in a week in the heat.

              2. most water supplied are pumped into a tank on a hill during the night and then fed by gravity during the day. some have gen back up for fire supply, many do not. if the power is out then once they run dry we are out. also an earthquake could break main lines and stop the supply or contaminate it. also power outages can affect well pumping to resupply tanks.

Well, the OP said it was for a book... which I am assuming is a work of fiction: Thus his question. And not many people (at least within this community) actually mean the living dead when they say "Zombie" They're refering to basically the worst type of situation imaginable - because if you're prepared for zombies taking of the world, then you're prepared for pretty much anything... even democrats.

Short term or long term? Consider what is happening in a pool, ignoring the users. Pure water keeps evaporating and more water is being added, BUT the other items in the water, such as heavy metals, never leave the pool (unless you drain and replace ALL of the water) and instead gets concentrated. A good filter might filter enough that it would be acceptable.

You could use the water and make a solar still. Personally, I would not drink it directly.

A quick search found some information:

One issue mentioned is trihalomethanes (THM)

Many things. In part, it depends on where you live. Is there a water tower which provides the pressure or is there a pump which provides the pressure? If there is a pump, as is common, especially in bigger cities, then when the power goes out to the pumps, the water stops.

interesting link, thanks. also if your town has a water tower the water is pumped up into it every night.

Filtering pool water is not good enough, you must distill it.
