Camping in or near shooting area

There must be threads on this. Sorry if it's a repeat.

I'm in Southern California. Can anyone recommend a fun place to take the family camping where you can shoot, or there is shooting nearby? I don't mind a bit of a trek. I started shooting a few years ago and love to camp. It's getting to be that time of year and I was thinking it would be fun to combine these activities.

If you don't mind the drive the Owens valley in the Eastern Sierra is beautiful. Over 98% of the land around us is public and open to shooting. We have scores of campgrounds as well. Ranging from a campground with amenities like Brown's Town right on Main sreet at the the edge of Bishop to more remote campgrounds. Everything is an easy drive so even if you stayed in a motel in town it's only a 5 minute drive out of any town to shoot on blm/dwp/etc. land. We also have many free public land shooting ranges. A general rule of thumb is head east of any town/highway 395 and anywhere between there and the White mountains is good to shoot. Some of the best fishing around up here to. Jack rabbit hunting year round if you're a hunter. I'll stop rambling for now but if you have questions feel free to ask here and I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge.

i asked my local gun store the same question, they highly recommended joining Desert Marksmen Rifle and Pistol Club. its camping and shooting all in one. you are allowed to bring guests. they even have a 1,000 yard range!

Here are a couple links to a threads on Bladeforums. We do a BushBash in spring and fall in Sequoia NF. We shoot the hell out of everything. This site has become more popular and noticeably dirtier (people shoot and leave their crap spewed about), so if you use it make sure to clean up for yourself and those before you.

Some good options! As the weather warms up, I'll have to make a plan. I'm in LA and love it up the 395 in the Sierras. That's great to know that there's not only great camping and fishing, but you can shoot also.

Plus one for Owens value. That is where I go almost exclusively. Drive a little farther to Diaz Lake and you can camp on a small lake. Drive out the back gate and you can shoot if you get a little farther away from the lake. Also very close to Lone Pine for supplies
