I recently bought a Tactical Assault Gear mountain ruck on sale for a little over $250. I really like it and thought I would share some of its features with you. Its a mondernized ALICE pack which is nice. The newer Army rucks are really big and this is nice if you're not going to dragging other stuff along a hike like a sleep system.

The first thing you notice is that they took the old alice pack and added MOLLE straps to it. This makes it nice for if you want to bring extra gear along that hooks up to MOLLE but dont want to be running around camping or hiking wearing a tac vest like a wierdo. Another thing really cool is they took those old pouches and made them zippered. This makes it easier to deal with as you may have experienced with old surplus rucks or those still issued them in basic or guard, the snaps may be bent making them unsnap sometimes or makes it impossible to unsnap. Its nothing major but its the little conveniences that help out.

I threw in X-box games so you can get a reference for the size. I couldnt think of anything else on hand that would help out. The radio pocket is improved also as its snapped together with a plastic belt fastner and is more squared than the old one. ITs also shallow which I assume is more for the manpack. This makes it convenient to store your toiletries or other smaller objects that need to be seperated from the main pack.
Two things you cant see. One, there is a velcro'd flap for the antenna and two, the map pouch is changned. Where in the old ALICE pack it was clearish plastic to see through, the new Army ruck a mesh, on this one its just solid.

In each side there are deep pockets that go to the bottom of the ruck. At the top on the outside there are antenna slots there also but I believe these pouches are for hydration systems. This is pretty neat though because you dont have to tie or strap down a camelbak underneith the main flap for the ruck.

Again TAG improves an old design. The frame is AWESOME. It looks powder coated and as you can see, give the wearer more space. I have a slight scoliosis so in basic, some of my spine would be rubbed raw from rucking. This design eliminates that metal strap that goes along your spine and pretty much makes a basket for your back and shoulders. Lets face it, at the end of a long hike with a heavy back or riding an ATV with it, you are NOT going to have picture perfect posture.

Front straps are way more padded than the old ALICE packs and are also curved like the new Army ones. They have a heavy duty plastic buckle instead of a quick release which I like as its less crap to break. I had one of the newer quick release buckles break off my patrol back when a hatch got slammed on it and there was no repair except to exchange it out. This makes it easy on the mountain ruck to replace and if it breaks on you in the field, you can see that they incorperated a metal buckle like that the old ALICE packs had to fasten the flap.

I think this pack is awesome! Its made in America and is there are no corners what so ever that were cut. I havent rucked with it yet but also I might exchange it for a multi cam one. There is a TAG store in San Diego and I asked them, they said it would be fine to exchange it. The show room didnt have them but I may have them ship one to the show room for me to exchange. It its pretty dark in person so I havent decided yet. I really wish they still made it in ranger green but that one has been discontinued.
