If you wanna punk someone, leave some durian in their car on a hot summer day. Just make sure you got a different ride home.

Look for local produce markets. There is one just a few hundred yards from my house that has pretty good prices on produce. If you buy cases of stuff like apples, you can get even better prices than the per pound price. 50cents per pound of apples is a good price though. I wanted to make cider this year but the local apple crop was terrible. I may have to find this asian market that you went to because at 50cents per pound of fuji, I could make a batch of cider. thanks for the tip!

Went to the Mexican market around the corner this morning, got a dozen eggs for $1.29. Definitely some cheaper goods to be had at the small markets.

I figured the zion market mentioned was at carson and bloomfield, I used to work for a company that was responsible for the lights and signs in that whole center. I have been in the back of the store and the employee only area many times and can tell you its very clean and I have eaten things from the many times. Also PC next time your there check out the pawnshop in the building thats separate with the nail shop and sushi place I have gotten some killer deals there including 2 40% silver dollars that the owner did not know were silver.

This isn't a phenomena limited to Asian/ethnic markets. Trader Joe's is non union and has low prices. I just paid $1.68 for 5 bananas at Albertsons...TJ's would have been 95 cents.

You have to have the wrong gene (or not have the right one) to "appreciate" durian, in which case you'll probably crave it. To me, durian comes closest to rotten onions.

But other candidates for large spiky fruit include jackfruit or soursop:

Jackfruit has a strong perfume which can become nauseating after awhile. It has a sticky milky sap.

Soursop is delicious, sweet and tart.

There are two other fruits that looks like this and doesn't come smelling like decaying flesh - jackfruit & guyabano.

Be advised. Do not crack a durian open in the house, unless you want it to smell like a morgue full of decaying flesh. My mother cracked one open and the rotten smell stayed in the house for a couple of days.

I'm not crazy about Durians or bittermelons. Wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. And I'm Asian.

durian is not so bad. kinda creamy. Its better if you don't see what it looks like and how (and as) it is prepared. I think people have been killed by falling durians.

Prices are low cause they are noy unionized, at the martket, or the supply chain....

Love me some asian markets. Used to go to Mitzua in Costa Mesa all the time. Shop and stop for some sushi for lunch. It's all good.

I'm Asian, so I guess I'll try it eating the cat parts if it is for free. How many days was it left in the drawer?

I find it funny how people always say that durian smells and tastes bad. I just cracks me up. I'm Asian and I like the fruit but I do have Asian friends that can't stand it. lol
