Holy Jim is always a good one... Haven't been in years but I hear the waterfall is still there.

Yup. About 30yrs. ago,3 of us dragged an ice chest full of beer up that blasted trail. Its said to be the steepest trail in Caliornia. We got stupid looks from backpackers coming up and going down the trail . We never did that again. No we did not pee in the creek. We were young and dumb for sure.

There are quite a few good blogs on trail hiking SoCal. It's nice since some of them have a good amount of pictures. The more popular trails have turned into scum hangouts. Switzer Falls is a perfect example of this. Really a beautiful trail but graffiti is prevalent which means your car is in danger of getting broken into and it can look like a gang hangout on weekends. My car was broken into at the Strawberry Peak trailhead. Every time I go to the woods two things happen. First, I'm armed and have a big knife. There are crazy crazy people up in the woods around these parts. I mean devil worship crazy. A buddy of mine was up there doing a video job at night and he said some of the things he saw freaked him pretty good. Groups walking trails, dressed in ceremonial garb, chanting. Second, I leave a note on my car windows stating all valuables had been removed and that there were eyes watching them. It's sure beautiful up there and mostly peaceful and quiet.

Also check out Malibu Creek and Santa Monica Mountains. Verdugo is a pretty good place to hike in the middle of the city. There's Mountain Lions there so be prepared. The further east you go the prettier it gets. I haven't done Vivian yet but I did others in that area and it's just insanely beautiful. The water quality is bad, though so bring a filter.
