Bombadillo, I couldn't agree more. I carry a hatchet in my Jeep for wheeling/camping trips and a saw in my backpack for who knows what. I always have a knife on me, currently a Benchmade I traded some labor for, cause I can't afford one.

The original ? is about Bear Grylls not about his products, though it's taken that route. The knife seems to have a decent amount thought put into it. I would also rather the LMF II but seems like it's worth throwing in the car for emergencys. It may not be on par with an exspensive Benchmade or even the LMF but look at what you get for the price point. It's like a Kimber 1911 vs the Hi-Point .45acp. How many of you have shot someone with your $1000+ Kimber, probably none. Will it do the job the maybe 1 time you do, of course it will. Will the Hi-point do the same job that one time? yes it will. And you can't say that's apples & oranges because they both go BANG when you pull the trigger. Just like the knives will cut whether they are $50 or $700.

    As for Bear himself:

How is Bear a "tool"? He was trained to survive and kick ***, which he's obviously done well having broken his back from a jump where his parashoot didn't open correctly. How'd you do after that? He's a god fearing man who loves his family and supports them. He's not getting government aid, like welfare for example. He entertains people by doing some cool yet may not be doable by everyone(physically or realistically) stuff on "TV". Remember its TV, the producers edit everything and the TV personality rarely have a say. Ask Ashley Spurlin from season 2 Top Shot. They made him out to be a bully and that was NOT the case. All I'm saying is I'd rather have him as a neighbor than most people on this forum. So I ask again how is he, as a person "tool"?

If you don't like him don't watch his show, don't buy his products but calling him a "tool" seems a bit harsh.

        When did you climb Everest?

Or are you just being a tool hating on people who are far more experienced?

You might hate his show, you might hate his personality, but the man does have the capability to survive far longer than you ever could. That should earn him a little respect.

Les Stroud has guides which help him plan and learn the area within his is supposed to survive, so does Bear. The difference is Bear brings them with him and Les takes his lessons the week before the show.

Survivorman Season 2 Episode 7 shows you that Les doesn't really know everything about the outdoors either.

The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

I'll give it to BG that he is a bad *** enough to get through SAS and the TV stuff is made for just that. He's a pretty face that they can put on TV and has enough of a personality to keep people watching. He's solid enough in his skills although I wonder sometimes if he is starting to like drinking his own pee because he's done it quite often lately. I've learned a thing or two and look at some of the risks he takes and think to myself, no freaking way am I going to jump, climb, or swim down that.

He has a backup camera crew with gear and I'm sure he's doing just fine knowing they're right there to help if nothing else. Just that mental support is huge when you're in survival mode.

Great links, thank you very much.
Just finished watching them and it seems like the knife itself is better on the LMFII, but the overall package the Bear Grylls wins out. The BG had a better hammering surface, sharpener, and the fire starter. But the LMFII had the better quality sheath w/molle functionality built in. The BG was molle compatible but would require additional straps to make it work right.
I wonder if you could get the LMFII to fit in the BG sheath. There are some physical differences (LMFII is a bit longer).

Equiptment that bears a name on it (no pun intented) is probably not worth half the price. I like to let the tool do the talking, not the pictures on it.

                  Post of the Day!

Bear's skills and experience are unquestionable. My ONLY complaint is that I expect a guy with his resume' to put his name on some good quality stuff that isn't sold at WalMart.

There in lies the reason for my original post. I don't doubt that you could find quality products everywhere (including wally world) but I do question mass produced mass marketed products of this nature.

-I would be more inclined to purchase from the Bear Gryll's line if it was his cameramen's line. Now those guys are the true survivalists!

-Where's Les Stroud's signature line? He's the real outdoorsman traveling and surviving alone., 7days at a time.

-I also agree that the Gerber LMF II is an awesome knife. Well made, good quality, and reasonably priced.

Certainly a feat but I'll give balls points to the combat vets here first.

I agree with you on this point. You have to give the guy some credit. From the little I know, he climbed Mt. Everest at 23 and served with the SAS. Neither of those things are easy. The man certainly has fortitude. How many of you guys would turn down an opportunity to make a few million bucks for sharing some of your life experience? I certainly wouldn't. As far as the sow goes, they portrayed the situations to more perilous than initially might have been, but I don't think that was under Bear's control.

I have his ~3.5" folder and I enjoy it. It's not as sharp as my Spyderco, but for the sentimental value (present from my brother) it's definitely a great folder. I think it's fairly inexpensive, as well.
