    Any thoughts on Bear Grylls?

    Anyone reviewed/owned/used his gear?
A friend of mine turned me on to
http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-31-0007...=33WN6E8B3X4IN but I'm a little skeptical about the mainstream/media man products.

For what it's worth, they sell it at REI, AND Walmart. I think it's all good marketing based on what is currently popular.

"If Bear Grylls can use it, it MUST be good!"

The knife was reviewed on youtube and i guess it's good as long as it's not one of the bear grylls ultimate knives that were released when the knife first came out. The problem with the first set of ultimates was that the pommel, or hammer thingy on the bottum of the knife, broke easily. Apparently they went back to fix it.

      neat knife anyway.

I like that the fire starter fits into the unit. So it's not so much that you have a knife and you also have a fire starter, but more that you have a knife/fire starter.

I have one and its fairly sturdy. You will have to sharpen it when you take it out of the package. I'm not sure why they sell is so dull.

Bear's personal knife (well, the one with his name on it) is a $700 custom.

The $40 blade from REI/Wally World?

It's a $20 Gerber and you're paying another $20 for Bear's name. Expect to have to sharpen it after every use.

If you wanna get a Gerber knife get the LMF II. Gryll's stuff is mostly crap.

If you look up reviews on his "survival" tactics you will see most think he is a hack. There are even some youtube videos of him saying he is at "dangerous remote location" etc... Then someone with a handicam shows you this "dangerous place" and right behind it is an interstate highway. Basically I think he is a hack after money and he is selling out to Gerber. I am biased and don't trust them, but have never used them either.

This. ^^^^^^ I bought one and love it. I have not gotten to put it through to much abuse yet but I can tell its a great knife. Worth every penny. When I ordered mine I ordered the survival model and it comes with the knife, sheath, two leg straps, and an extra belt cutter/rope cutter. The knife can be carried in a handful of configurations. Do a youtube search on a review of the Gerber LMF II and see what you think.

I bought one for giggles and grins. Haven't used it yet.

                      As for Bear Grylls.

Bear Grylls is synonomous with Tool.

Bear Grylls was trained in the SAS i think he knows what he is doing, what he does on TV is called entertainment. He is paid big bucks to do what Discovery tells him to do.

A tool! really, how do you come up with that, hell the show like all is for entertainment value and ratings, he was trained by the SAS before he got injured and youre calling him a tool, if you can get through SAS training then be apart of the regiment full time. Youre by know means a tool, the fact that you would even say that boggles my mind, it was a joke right. Same goes for any special forces Navy Seals etc.

At age 23 he climbed Mount Everest being the youngest guy form the u.k. to do so, just FYI when youre making B.S. comments.

None of this has anything to do with the Gerber knife with his name on it. Even if he climber Mt. Everest or was trained by SAS i'm sure hes not going out doing missions or climbing Mt. Everest with the Bear Gryll's knife from Wal Mart. This OP was asking if his GEAR was any good not if you think hes a TOOL or not.
