    Camping with OHOD

Hiking and camping is my thing.
I love the outdoors and everything that it brings; serenity, clean air, fishing, hunting, climbing, cooking, campfires, sleeping bags, cooking stoves, rain, sunshine, snow, cold, heat, water, rivers, streams, babbling brooks, bears, squirrels, rabbits and ants.

My all time favorite photograph near Bumpass Hell at Lassen Volcanic NP:

Lassen NP. Snow on the ground & ice on the lake in late July.

Had a great time there last year. Hiked down to the crater with my 5 yr old. The descent down was covered with snow & ice. He had a blast.

One of the most beautiful places I've been to.

No prob! I love camping. Too many people don't just GET AWAY from the city life, and don't realize how (A) awesome it is (B) how many skills you can learn/perfect out there and (C) adventure! (D) Plenty more things you can think of!

If I were a bum, I'd probably end up out in the wilderness just livin' life, because you can find all you need out there.

Me too, I could spend my whole life camping and not get sick of it.

Camping must be new to you.(from your earlier posts,I know it can't be) All of that gear looks brand new, like it was just pulled out of a calgunners epic BOB.

I have some fond but dusty memories from many trips to Lassen, including skinny dipping in some ferociously cold lake after a couple grimy days on the trail.

Can't beat the crisp air, the amazing rock piles, the wind groaning through the trees at night like some far-off jet aircraft, and the decided lack of Yosemite-like overcrowding.

We were in Lassen Park this weekend. Main road is closed at the Devastated area. Had a nice little snowstorm Saturday evening in Hat Creek.

Some of it is, the flash makes it look shiny.
The winter gear is new as I just started winter camping this year.
The water filter is from last summer. I used to have an MSR Sweetwater but it crapped out on me.
Last year I went camping almost every other week.

But yeah, kind of looks like an epic BOB doesn't it, but not really.

My kitchen is minimal, along with the bathroom.
The sleeping bag is down so it is much smaller. The parka is down as well.

You should see my BV 500, it's all beat up from sitting on it and tossing it in the back of my truck and around rocks. This one is half the size.

All in all, the pack loaded only weighs about 35 lbs.
Normally I don't carry extra clothes except for socks and underwear, but since it might rain, I'm bringing extra.

                          No tent?

Carry extra food, extra fuel, and a Spot. If you are going by yourself have a TRUSTED friend watch your SPOT check ins.

Ever try a Jet boil? Much more efficient with the fuel. Boils water in 2 mins flat. No wasted heat.

                          Best headlamp on the planet

Bears and a 40cal? Are you using 40 ball ammo not hollow-point I hope?

Boil Time 16 oz (0.5 Liter) = 2 minutes, 15 seconds (avg over life of Jetpower canister)
Water Boiled 12 Liters per 100g Jetpower canister

I use a bivy sack for a tent. It's basically a waterproof burrito bag.
An MSR Pocket Rocket suits my needs pretty well, but I hear the Jet Boil is da'bomb.
I saw that headlamp at REI and was thinking about getting one, but meh, I went cheap.

                              Ammo, got me some ball.
Last year when I went out at this time there were bear and cougar tracks everywhere.

Think about it, in my nice little bivy, they can have a burrito.
