If you want the best go with busse. Scrapyard knives are also very good knives. Remember you get what you pay for in most cases. Stay away from Chris Reeve knives they're garbage.

These are the Busse knives I think are great survival blade.

      1. SNFO or NMSFNO
      2. ASH-1
      3. SAR-6 or a Sarsquach

Busses's are known in the serious knife community as knives that can take on unbelievable abuse. Go to knife tests.com and check out the FFBM. you won't believe what it can do.

        LOL!!!!

Its gonna cost me another $70 here pretty soon. Just cost me $30 for an Ontario Rat-1, $170 for a Spyderco Special edition Stretch II with Carbon fiber scales and ZDP-189 steel, Kershaw something or other, and a hatchet awhile back. After dropping like $275 on them, I'm coming back and think I'm going to get the Cold Steel SRK for my BOB. I want to swap out my 4" buck knife fixed blade for the SRK or something similar. This was a good thread to get me thinking though as I was already looking for something.

The title says "survival", so that implies a certain use. Give this a minute of your time, quick read and will explain a little.

Survival knives longer than say 5", are a little too large to be used for general survival purposes. Longer than 5" or so, is typically a "fighting" knife, and as such, a "survival" knife would be too short in a "fighting" role. Might help make the decision if you havent already.

I gotta recommend the SOG seal pup. I've had mine for around 8 years now, and I use it everyday for work, and I abuse my tools brutally. I've only had to hone it 3 times, everything else the stropping wheel takes care of.

Whatever knife you choose, you should also consider carrying a multi-tool to go with it. With a multi-tool accompanying your knife, you vastly increase your capabilities even if you get separated with your pack.

My solution to this was to contact Eric Lind at Mashed Cat Outfitters about making me a custom sheath that could accomodate a Maxpedition magazine pouch which would hold my Victorinox Spirit and a firesteel. It turned out great and these items will always be with my Swamp Rat RMD on my hip when out camping or backpacking.

I have an ESEE-5 as well, great knife, well balanced and it stays amazingly sharp. I haven't seen anyone mention TOPS knives. I have one of their smaller skinning knives, which I really like. Has anyone used any of their bigger knives?
