WTB SKS
Winchester Model 12, 1200 or 1300
older 870 Wingmasters in 12 or 20 gauge in SoCal/IE -
Im a big fan of the Gerber Prodigy. its a little bit on the smaller side but its a very good knife and very affordable. If youre looking for a good chopper i like the Kabar BK2, but its on the heavy side for hiking or backpacking.Roads? Where we're going...we don't need roadsComment

I just had some kid talk me into a Cutco K-Bar, thing is bad, lifetime guarantee even against abuse, but the price tag was horrible.....all for a good cause though, it is his first job, poor guy."Cum catapultae proscriptae erunt tum soli proscripti catapultas habebunt."Comment

The original and largest online knife and cutlery catalog where you can buy pocket knives and every pocketknife from Benchmade Knives and Spyderco Knives
There are so many from Ka-Bar to RAT, to Kershaw to Colt Steel. I can't give you an honest answer, but my survival knife is MUCH smaller than most with only about a 5" fixed blade, but the sheath was awesome, it was made in America, and steel is decent. Sure its not a $200 Busse or something but its still gonna be a good fixed blade when I need it. I prefer a 7-10" blade with a very thick tang to be used almost machete style if needed. It doesn't need to be a "fighting knife" IMO and I can't stand saw back knives or anything but a flat tang on mine. Good luck, there are sure a lot out there
Just don't get the Bear Grylls crap please.Comment

A few I may start to recommend
I LOVE this knife ^^^
Surprisingly good for the money!
trade-off between knife, and machete and still relatively lightweight
I think I'm either going to get this or the Benchmade I mentioned earlier
I just got this and can't say enough about it. Either here or amazon are your best bet
Another great thing to have in your bag-o-goodies for survival. Much more effective than a knife at getting wood
Anyway, hope this helps but you can get a decent knife for 50-80 bucks and have 95% of what a $250 knife has as far as features. Again the steel may not be quite as nice, but it all depends on budget and what you want it for.Comment

One thing you want to seriously consider if you plan on hiking/back packing is the weight. Weight can add up quickly so you want to minimize it as much as you can. For hikers, you have to find the balance between quality and weight. If you want both, expect to pay a bit more.
Since you want something to chop wood with, I d go with a fixed 5" + blade with a good tang and maybe even a choil.
A good place where you can view durance / destruction test is http://www.knifetests.com/. You can get a general idea of the quality of knife. Note that knives can differ in quality even its from the same company and same model.Comment

This is what I have in my BOB.
Price was definitely an issue when I was shopping around, however, overall it's a decent knife.
This is a little bit more commercialized but

I carry this: http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-22-4179...6443498&sr=1-1
Not too fancy, not too big... great price for a sturdy knife.Comment

I have a few, my most recent favorite is my Dennis Cook Explorer. I meet him, and as he told me about the knife, and the thought that went into it, I really appreciated the overall usefulness of the blade - from tip to the belly to the curved hilt, it makes a lot of sense. The one I got has the "Bottle opener" hilt...the one on his website doesn't.
Or, if budget is a issue, go with a Scrapyard Knives "Son Of Dogfather". They're about $150 or so used, and if you can find a beater even cheaper. Anything from the Busse family is great.
Here is a Swamprat that would also be a great option.
Go to www.Knifetests.com to see what a knife can really do, and that should help your decision making.Comment

I use a Gerber LMF II I got cheap on Amazon for about 40 dollars. It's served me better than anything else I tried for the last couple of years, it's stood up to truly ridiculous use, including batoning, hacking down small trees and bushes, and general abuse, and if it ever breaks I'll pull the other 40 dollar LMF II I bought at that price out and use it for a few more years and feel really good about it.
The buttplate on the thing is handy for hammering in tent poles too.sigpicComment
