can I convert a 16 oz. propane cooker to 20 pound bottles?

I have a camp cooker that uses the small disposable bottles. I wonder if there is a conversion to hook this up to the 20 pound bottles. I also see there is an adapter to re-fill the small containers using the bigger ones? are eithr of these options safe if done correctly ?

you could put a 50 gallon on it if you wanted to. there are plenty of conversion kits. or like you said, just buy the kit to refill and keep the 20gal in away from the fire. either or.

      Here ya go.

      Big 5 also carries these.

I really don't know but I am guessing the pressure in a 20 pounds bottle would be a lot greater then the little 16oz bottle. Will the safety valve hold up to the bigger bottle's pressures? Thats the only thing I can think of.

The adapter linked above would work fine, you could also get one of those "trees" that attaches to the big bottle and allows you to hook multiple devices (grill and lantern) to it for about the same price, you'd just need a hose then. It's all perfectly safe, the pressure is the same and is regulated by a regulator on the unit anyway.

I have one of those hoses and an adaptor to run an old 3-burner white gas stove from a 20lb propane tank. It works fine.

Both the smaller and larger tanks supply the same pressure (i.e., unregulated). The pressure regulator is built into the stove burner valve(s).

The tree works great, I've been using it for a few years, connects up to three devices on a 5 Gal. BBQ tank. I usually have a full spare tank or two for the BBQ, so there's always one ready for camping.

Nope, the small bottles run the same pressure as the big ones. It's all about the vapor pressure of propane and not container size.

The pressure varies greatly with temperature though...http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/pr...re-d_1020.html

I run the conversion from Big 5. It was about $10 less expensive than the coleman.

You can find those hose adapters at home depot or lowes too. That's where I got mine.

I have a refill adapter and haven't used it since two of the refills leaked.

My pop's made me a hose, he works for a propane company. Works fine on my camping bbq. Cost something like $20 in materials (6 ft hose, and the fittings)
