If you want land look in the tax lein sales. I saw thousands of parcels of land for sale in one section of the sierras alone.

The best thing to do it go to your local title company (Fidelity Title, Stewart Title, Chicago Title, etc.) and get a preliminary title report. This will give you all the information you need to know as far as tax liens, loans, and ownership. It will also tell you if there are easements on the property.
