    "Bug Out" TEOTWAWKI,Zombies. ammo choices.

Should I stock pile 9mm,.45 or .223,7.62x39? What about sg rounds? Should I just load up on one caliber? How is everyone else preparing?

Buy for each caliber you own. I feel 1000 rounds is good for each weapon. I have like 1250 762x39, few hundred 45 and bout 100 12ga give or take

For HD & if I had the $ I would have at least 1k rounds per defensive weapon. And if playing it smart, all calibers would be from like platforms... Example, all 223 would be ARs, all .45 would be 1911, all 9mm would be P226....ect. That way mags & ammo would be interchangeable per respective platform.

Make sure and have plenty of spare mags for each weapon as well. As well as some spare parts, tools, and a cleaning kit.

The ultimate ammo is 7.62x51 Israeli tungsten core projectiles loaded into the load of your choice. I remember seeing buckets of them at gun shows for 35 dollars. Now they are 2-3 dollars each. They will punch through 2-3 inches of soft steel.

              Zombies?

              .22, 9mm and .223

Anything else is dead weight for the same job.

I keep about 2K+ on hand for each caliber.

See here from Jim Rawles at SurvivalBlog.com:

It is important to maintain balance in your preparations. Food storage, first aid supplies, and heirloom seed storage should be priorities. But after those have been taken acre of, it makes sense to stock up on ammunition. As long as you store your ammo in sealed military surplus cans, there is no risk in over-estimating your needs, since ammunition has a 50+ year storage life if protected from oil vapors and humidity. Consider any extra ammo the ideal barter item. The late Col. Jeff Cooper rightly called it "ballistic wampum."...

I consider the following figures minimums:
                2,000 per battle rifle
                500 per hunting rifle
                800 per primary handgun
                2,000 per .22 rimfire
                500 per riotgun

If you can afford it, three times those figures would meet the "comfort level" of most survivalists.
Keep in mind that ammo is heavy. Although I really like .45 1911's, I've opted to go with 9mm for handgun bug-out duty because of the difference in weight/round. Standard calibers will be best for barter. I keep a ton of .22 LR on hand partially for that reason. Lots of non-gunnie people own a .22 of one variety or another.

Do you people have any idea how much a thousand rounds of each of those calibers weigh? 40 to 50 pounds each? Bug in maybe bug out forgetaboutit. What do you think you're going to be playing call of duty shooting hoards of people? Anything short of complete nuclear armageddon would require less than 100 rounds per caliber.

Stock up and bug-in, that's my plan. I have a GHB and setup for my dorm room if anything happens.
