    Fruitcake- The Ultimate Survival Food!

No kidding- years ago I saw that movie Iron Will where the kid eats his mom's fruitcake to sustain him during a dog sledding race- Not long after that, I saw a 60 Minutes piece on the monks in Kentucky that make it- They brought out a 30 year old Fruitcake and tasted it and said it gets better with age- the shelf life if stored in a cold area is over 25 years!

Sounds funny but I think I might get a couple

    I've had fruitcake.

I think I would rather eat sawdust and lard.

My mother always kept one by the door. Came in handy when we had to keep the door held open to bring in the groceries and such.

I always thought that it was just a bad food product made worse by modern high volume cooking processes.

        I was wrong.

Last Christmas one of my customers gave me a fresh one directly from a local very up-scale bakery.

Nice appearance, fancy wrapping paper and little bow.

        Tasted like garbage.

          fruity goodness

My guess is most of you guys have not tasted a real fruitcake (pervs, I can see the gears turning, no thats not what I mean), and I am not talking about the cheap sh.. kind you find in the store for two bucks. A homemade cake, made with real ingredients, properly dried/ candied fruit, bourbon can be awesome. I could see a year or two, maybe a few, in perfect conditions but I ain't eating any quarter of century old cake. My sense is a properly made cake has many of the things one needs to keep going. BTW in Jamaica during the Easter season they sell an inexpensive fruit cake in almost all the stores that they call, strangely enough "Easter Cake". Very good and did I mention cheap... My boys dam near lived off that stuff for weeks... "I'll have a Jerk and stripe mon"... there you guys go thinkin again . erye mon

look up the kentuky monks -its one heck of a well made bourbon fruitcake- not that candied doorstop we're all so reluctant to eat! And again you must admit it is a long shelf life dessert with nuts and fruit- a good source of needed calories!- i'll eat it after the twinkies run out!

I must be one of the few people who actualy likes fruitcake. A good fruitcake made with dense flower and soaked in bourbon is one of the best camping foods ever invented.

If you actualy want to try a good fruitcake this is one of the better ones that is easy to get Trappist Abby 1 pount fruitcake

                        Fixed it for ya

Homemade fruitcake is outstanding if made the old-fashioned way (soaked in scotch and 'rested' for a few weeks); although I only prefer it in small doses myself, it is easy to see why some kid out dog-sledding in sub-zero temperatures could survive on it -- it sure beats the hell out of cliff-bars!

I heard that there was really a small number of fruitcakes worldwide, and that they have just been circulated, being passed around during the holidays, for thousands of years now.

Many years ago my shooting buddies and I purchase several fruitcakes. Used the cakes as "clays' for our shotgun. We made an improvised sling and wrap the cake in clear plastic to keep it in tack during the throw. Sad to say even the ants on the ground passed on the cake. Yes the cakes were cheap mass manufactured type.
