    The fear of getting lost and dying for whatever reason is why I only hike local trails where you frequently see celebrities and children.

          A Garmin is the best answer, or something similar , but time learning how to use a map and compass is not lost. The other item I always carry, remnant from when I trapped unfamiliar back country is a roll of bright surveyor tape. when sceptical flag your way in at eye level to mark your trail out, just remember to remove your flags or everyone can find your secret spots.
