For simple stuff like this, simply laying down a track to follow back, the cheapest, simplest ones will do just fine. Its been a while since I have payed attentin, but the Garmin Etrex line is the lower end line that will do what you need for not much over $100. -
It sounds like you want a Garmin InReach. For matters of this nature, I respect this young lady's advice.

There are apps like Gaia GPS that would work, but you need to remember to download the map of the area you will be in if you won't have cell service. If you want a dedicated GPS, there is Garmin, and even better you can get Garmin with Inreach for satellite texting and emergency dispatch.Brian Kelly

I have an InReach Explorer+. I don't like using it for a GPS/ mapping device. The phone apps mentioned above (GaiaGPS, AllTrails, Onyx) are significantly better.
I always take the InReach, though, so I can contact my wife or emergency services when out of cell range.Guns, dogs and home alarms. Opponents are all of a sudden advocates once their personal space is violated.

I agree with getting them the resources to survive out in the outdoors, beyond just the GPS. Did they have anything with them to survive? Beyond a GPS, a small survival kit, with the items to make a fire, stay warm, maybe even signal if needed. I use my Garmin GPS MAP64s all the time, and the Tracback feature can be a godsend IF needed. I also carry an small personal ACR Resqulink Epirb (from my boat) if it really gets ugly and rescue is needed. GPS sure is a benefit if you know how to use it! Garmin is my favorite!Comment
