In our fairly limited time as hikers and outdoorsman, my wife and I have already both found ourselves within striking distance of rattlesnakes.
In my case, it was an underground mine tour, and the snake was just sluggish from the cold, but it was inches from my foot and well hidden.
In hers, she was lucky that it rattled when she got in range instead of striking, but she could easily have been bit if it had been in a bad mood.
I've found these two by TurtleSkin, and they seem pretty good (I like that they don't look like hockey shinguards, as some others can).
I figure, though, this august crowd might have better info than a few minutes of me googling around.
any advice?
