Serrations vs. plain edge?

I like the combo because I like the use of serrations in certain circumstances, but mainly use the plain edge. I do like a plain edge knife though!

I prefer a smooth edge for cutting meat and veggies, but I like a serrated edge for bread and similar items.. since I abuse the crap out of any knife, I tend to go with a combo blade (for carry) since I don't always keep the straight edge of the knife absolutely sharp, I can depend on the serrated blade to do what I need to in a hurry if necc... but that's me.. this after carrying a straight edge knife for many years and I found them lacking..

As a team roper from the 90s, and being around workhorse's I always carried a spyderco serrated blade. I've witnessed at least one account where a nylon lattigo strap needed to be cut off in a hurry to relieve pressure on a horse. Not to mention having to cut a stiff nylon braided rope if some ones loosing a limb. If it needs to be cut on a hurry and its tough, serrated is the only way for me...I carry a serrated spyderco to this day, have been since 94'.

Sharp knives need no serrations...even heavy ties will part when I push the edge into them.

This is the reason I have multiple EDC knives.

My primary knife is a plain 2.75" straight edged knife with no serrations.

I also have a 2" folder clipped on my boot that has serrations. When I need to cut anything that needs to be sawn through, I reach for my small boot knife.

My EDC is a combo. Benchmade assisted opening tactical folder. I started carrying a combo basically because that is all I had, but after years of cutting rope or cloth more than really any other material, I just stayed with that setup. I've used straight edged knives before, and keep all of my knives as sharp as I can, but at the end of the day, a knife is still a tool, and you use the tool for the job at hand. More often than not, in my EDC, those jobs are made easier by a partially serrated blade.

So for a long time I subscribed to the nutnfancy philosophy that serrations were bad because they're hard to sharpen or whatever.

Recently I was cutting open some packages, some of which included items that were bound by zip ties to the card board. For the life of me I couldn't get a plain edge through that zip tie, so I got one of my partially serrated blades (that I only had because it was on sale and they didn't have the plain edge version) and I snapped the zip ties like nothing.

I was intrigued, so I got some rope, and cut that up a little bit, found that serrations were like WAYYYYY better for that too. Now I'm thinking that all of my EDC knives, as in knives I'm actually gonna carry need to have serrations on 'em. For example, what if someone robbed a store you were in and they zip tied you? You could pull your serrated edge knife out and snap the tie easily, while if you were sawing away at it with a plain edge blade you'd be in a tough spot. (assuming the bad guys didn't search you, that is). I know that example is way out there, and unlikely to ever occur but it had me thinking. What if I needed to cut my or someone elses seatbelt off in a car wreck? I don't think a plain edge blade could do that as effectively as a serrated knife.

What do you guys think? Serrations yay or nay? Partial serrations, full plain edge, or full serrated, what's your preference?

Serrations are for cheap steak knives.

My EDC is a combo blade with razor sharp smoothness backed up with an inch or two of "flesh aggressive" metal...

And on other days it is a full flesh aggressive blade. Plus, the non straight edge types seem to cut through things faster due to a half saw of the blade...
