Just curious, what advantages/situations is a combo edge or full serrated knife more useful than a plain edge? Are you cutting your steak with it? Aren't serrations on most knifes difficult to sharpen?

Serrations...why?

I always go straight for the serrations to cut rope. In my experience, they work significantly faster and easier.National Rifle Association (NRA) Life Patriot Endowment Member

Serrations rip thru most anything. Most awesome way to cut to the bone. Spyderco system to sharpen knives make quick of putting an edge back on serrations, hands down best on the market. My 2 cents.Comment

serrated is the way to go.sigpicComment

This all depends on if you are a slashing knife fighter or stabbing one. Either way I do not think it really makes a huge difference when push comes to poke. No one wins in a knife fight.Comment

I cannot stand combo blades, compromises rarely work out to be better. I like my Leatherman Charge as it has a plain edge and a serrated edge. Serrated edges are really nice for cutting ropes, twine, branches, cardboard etc and they effectively stay sharper longer than a plain edge does. However, there are places that you just need a plain blade for so I have to agree, carry both.Comment

If I was cutting rope all day I would say go with a full serrated blade, but for me personally plain edge is the way to go. I like to have a clean cut when using my knife not a tearing cut.
If you keep your knife sharp either will be just fine.
I will say I have been wanting a full serrated Spyderco Pacific Salt though.

Serrations do have a use when using a knife as a saw or cutting things like bread.
When it comes to kitchen knives, unless it is a bread knife, it is often an admission of poor quality.Democrats>Socialists>Communists - Same goals, different speeds.

^^^"no one wins in a knife fight."
I read once that ...
"the winner of a knife fight gets to die in the ambulance on the way to the hospital."
I use a half / half blade myself and I know its a compromise but it's one I can live with.Last edited by sealocan; 07-31-2014, 11:00 PM.Comment

I don't have a ccw permit and work in Oakland so a blade is better than nothing and at work I cut cardboard and heavy bags of dextrose and citric acid. Which brings up another question, won't citric acid eat away even the best stainless steel over time? I need to change the blade in the b.s utility knives they give us about twice a month.Comment
