    SURVIVAL KNIFE

    SURVIVAL KNIFE

Hello fellow Survivors. I am wondering if any knows of a do it your self blade coatings to reduce glare? I am looking at trying to reduce the glare on my high carbon chopper. I dont want to use a cheap primer as it will chip and scratch off rather easily. I would like a black coating. I know that it will eventually wear on the cutting edge and high use areas. Any suggestions?Let me know, thanks

You could try duracoat or ceracote if you want black. Or you could go the cheap easy route and just force a patina on it. Mustard, vinegar , diluted ferric chloride acid all work. If you dont plan on processing food you could also blue it with gun blue. You tube has tons of videos on that stuff. Hope this helps

          High carbon you say?
Soak it in vinegar for a few hours, even overnight. Rinse, sharpen, and have a dark grey blade.

Or potentially use a commercial bluing product like Casey Birchwood Perma Blue.

would you consider a 'stonewash' finish? reduces glare but not completely. just another option. i picked up a kershaw link a while back. blade is 420HC stainless with stone wash finish. im lovin it

I think the vinegar is a good idea, and grapefruits work well also.

I would skip the perma blue on a knife to be used on any food or game.

You can also used 60 grit sand paper to scratch the surface.

Id prefer a mirror polish for signalling, and in any combat situation you will face your blade will surely be covered in the glory of your enemies.

Have to bake the powder coat in a oven. Might ruin the handles.

You could rub mustard all over it and leave it overnight or maybe stab a potato with it. I was going to get a couple of artist brushes and paint a mustard pattern on my spyderco to make a cool patina pattern, but I have not done it yet.

Look up PATINA for metal finishing. There is also https://steelfxpatinas.com/ - explore their product line.

A lot of people like it when the coating wear off of a chopper with use... and some just strip it off. I have a Scrap Yard that I've stripped. Stone washed or polished finished look good and go through wood better than rough coatings which are similar to a wrinkle coat. Sanding with a random orbital looks just like stone wash to me, plus it is easy. Not exactly glare-free, but better than mirror polished.

Not sure how he does this finish. kind of a blackwash. It is pretty matte. This may be like the acid finishes people mention.

Cold Bluing and maybe a light sanding would probably look great.

I used Apple Cider Vinagar and left it overnight on this one.

Not sure how this finish is achieved. Not sure if it is durable.
