When these lowers first came out a year or two ago, there was a lot of question as to the licensing. As I understand it, this company registered the name "Umbrella" for use in the firearms industry, which was somehow legal to do (I'm not a lawyer, so I can't explain the technicalities) without having to license it from Capcom.

As for the logo, it actually cannot be copyrighted. Here's a wikipedia link. Technically, ANY company could release a lower with an umbrella logo.
Guys, copyright is not involved here as that's a different issue and pertains to Capcom/Sony's artistic use in the video and game industries. There are actually numerous "Umbrella Corporations" throughout the United States all conducting legitimate business in their various industries with no connection to Sony (and some prior to Capcom's use). As for the logo, again, copyright and trademarks are two different things. We hold federal trademarks for both the name as well as the logo for the firearms industry. So no, any company cannot release a product in our industry using the name or logo without our permission.

See these two links for our firearms industry trademark registrations:
The UMBRELLA CORPORATION. Explore trademark details, ownership information, other trademarks owned by Umbrella Corporation Weapons Research Group or file your own trademark.

As for the geometric shape eligibility, you are confusing the "basic geometric shapes are not possible to copyright" rule with federal trademark registration and how logos work for business. Two different animals; we hold trademarks not copyrights so that doesn't apply. But it does explain why you can find similar umbrella logos all over the internet that don't violate either.

              Yay! Looking forward to it!

What about uppers? I would have grabbed a FDE lower and been quite happy about it, but I'd want a matching upper. Less of an issue with black, which should match my existing uppers no problem. So I look forward to August! (I'd also be happy with FDE lower+upper, of course)

That is pretty awesome though. I really want to get it.
If I was looking to do that I'd go with an 80% and have it engraved. Plus no registration. Win.

Law abiding firearm owners have no chance in this state.
