Isn't it preferable for a "screwdriver" to be "softer" than the screw so that the "screwdriver" strips out before the screw?

A screw driver needs to fit as perfect as possible so neither the screw nor the driver slip or strip. also applies to Allen keys as well.

The screw was harder than 6 of my allen bits. Unfortunately the goal was to remove the screw not bugger my Chinese bits.

Do your unscrewing with a good quality hex wrench (bondhus, etc.) and use the bits with the Seekonk for tightening only.
If you want hardened bits, Brownells has them in kits or individually. I find that I have to temper them when new to keep from snapping them. I just throw then in the lead pot for 30 minutes or so, and they last a good bit longer than as new.

Now, I do not own any Wheeler. I noticed that out of all the replies, no one mentioned Wheeler

I have both the Chapman and the Wiha. This is because I already know about them. I have never heard of Wheeler, till I saw them on MidwayUSA and the other gun-related web shops.

65 lbs is a bit much for action screws but the question is not where to get good bits.

The question is have you put so much torque on the screws that it has fused the threads together, basically cold welding them. If that is the case no amount of high quality screw bit will get it out.

I suspect you have over torqued them and damaged them to the point they can not be removed.

In order not to damage the action (that is if it not already damaged from excessive torque) I would go to a reputable gunsmith and have them try to take it out. IF they can't then they will have to drill them out and hopefully you learn a lesson about torquing limits on screws.

Dan, I believe he said inch pounds. That's roughly 5-1/2 foot pounds.
