    Hard Bits thanks

I did a search with no luck.

Who knows of an American company that produces hardened steel screwdriver/torx/allen bits?

I torqued my action screws in a Savage 111 with a Seekonk tool @ 65 in lbs and the bits I used seem to be single use Chi-Com junk. ate 6 bits trying to back them out for trigger work.

Your local industrial hardware store can hook you up. That's where I buy my supplies from.

I've run into this problem too, especially with the tiny ones, they just strip out and you find yourself replacing everything with hex.

I've used most of the brands out there, and PB Swiss bits are my favorite. I own and use all of their bits, and their Torx screwdrivers are outstanding.

Snap On are a close second, and enjoy the advantage of being available from the local rep. Brownell's branded bits are also very good.

The bits sold by McMaster Carr have always been good quality.

                  Chapman

Chapman has some of the best quality screwdriver tools and bit sets. They cost more ... but they are worth every penny spent. Chapman is a US Company. I believe they are based in CT.

Next on my list would be Wiha. Wiha also makes very high quality screwdrivers and bits. Wiha is a German company.

I own both Chapman and Wiha. The Chapman set is used for light gunsmithing and armory work. I use the Wiha calibrated torque driver to install takedown screws into that soft aluminum and for optics installation.

Back when I bought my kit it was $189.00 so consider that a bargain

Thing is they are better made then any thing out there and the little ratchet gets into places no other tool can. So it pays for itself the very first time it's used in a tight spot.

Keep in mind you can just buy the bits you need and not get the whole set.

I like the look of the Swiss. Now to find a US distributor

Isn't it preferable for a "screwdriver" to be "softer" than the screw so that the "screwdriver" strips out before the screw?

The screw was harder than 6 of my allen bits. The goal was to remove the screw not round the corners off of my Chinese bits.
