Understood, sounds like a sweet location. My apologies for busting your chops. You gotta remember most of us live in places that leaving firearms in vehicles with windows open isn't an option. I like the 0000 steel wool option and some CLP method as mentioned in above post. c good

I think you need to man up and send that pistol to Sig for their refinish job. That will go far in righting you of your irresponsibility and instill confidence back into your friendship with your friend.
If it were my gun (this would not have happened) but if it did, I would do the CLP, rag thing and probably be ok. But this is your friends pistol and he trusted you and you failed, so you got to make it right. Just my 2 sense for what it's worth.

Just wondering how did this turn out? Did the CLP take care of it? Hope so.

I would never leave a gun in the car, especially one that is not mine. Secondly, if I borrowed a firearm, and used it, I would clean it as soon as I was done with it.

Personally I think you should just refinish the rusted areas. If I was in your predicament that's what I would do. I value my good friends, and if he was nice enough to lend you 2 firearms for a while, you should have taken care of them better than your own. This is an expensive item, and should be treated as such.

Last year, I put a number of my guns, including a 35 year old Colt Python in a safe and forgot about them for a while. This was after having them a various places on my property and finally deciding I needed a "secure" central location.

After about 6 months, I took the Python out and it was pitted with rust in various places. I followed other suggestions here and used mineral oil and 0000 steel wool to try and remove it. That was successful on some guns where the rust was only superficial, but the Python is scarred and will need to be refinished. This is a gun with less than 20 rounds through it.

The lesson I drew from this is that if we are going to have guns on our premises, even if we are not avid collectors or shooters, we need to be aware of where they are at all times and keep them in reasonable condition.

At the moment, I am happy that the worst effect of my negligence will be purely financial and it appears all you need is money or effort to solve your dilemna.Good luck with the cleanup.

I'm glad that the 0000 steel wool with some gun oil worked. Your right it will only work on some superficial rust. Anything deeper and it will need to be blasted and refinished. I have found that a light coat of wax on my revolvers not only brings out the bluing but protects them much better than oil or grease when in contact with water or sweat.

So I asked a good friend of mine to borrow his Mark II .22 and Sig 226 so she could start out gradually. Well after shooting I left the guns in my car and accidentally left the window down. With the last rain storm that went thru the truck got water in it and the gun got moist and started to rust. I feel horrible about my buddies gun.

                    Question:
Is there any easy way to repair surface rust? It appears that only the slide has rust on it. Do I have to have the slide re-blued? Any help is greatly appreciated.

                    Thanks.
Contact sig sauer ph 603-772-2302 and ask then for the appropriate treatment for your coated handgun. I clean all solvents and oil from the exterior of my SS & blued steel weapons using naptha & alcohol then I coat them with TREWAX www.trewax.com 1-800-451-7096.A GS we all used taught everyone of his customers about trewax to protect the blued steel & walnut stocks on rifles and shotguns.

Everyone in this thread that isn't trying to help tkoden with the rust issue (not any other issue) can chill out and not chime in. Quit bickering amongst yourselves.
