    Please Help... Rust on 226

    Background:
My girlfriend had been bugging me to take her to the range and go shooting. All I have access to is a .357 and a 8" barrel 44 mag which aren't good guns for a girl to learn on. So I asked a good friend of mine to borrow his Mark II .22 and Sig 226 so she could start out gradually. Well after shooting I left the guns in my car and accidentally left the window down. With the last rain storm that went thru the truck got water in it and the gun got moist and started to rust. I feel horrible about my buddies gun.

    Question:
Is there any easy way to repair surface rust? It appears that only the slide has rust on it. Do I have to have the slide re-blued? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

The slide isn't blued, you should try some solvent and a rag or a tooth brush. And then oil it, I wouldn't recommend a Brillo pad but someone might. And if you cant get it off you could take it to Imbert & Smithers and ask them since your pretty close.

the slide is finished i that nitron stuff.
sigs are notorious for getting rusty. just the way it works. to be honest a little bit of rain water, unless left for days on end, really shouldnt rust a gun. but hell im a sig guy and i see this all the time.

rag+brush+clp is going to work pretty good. test solvent on small area make sure it doesnt remove the finish.

NO BRILLO PAD you will remove the nitron and the you REALLY have to refinish the slide. which is still okay, for about fifty bucks you can ahve it totally redone.

the screws however you just clean up best as you can should be all right.

then you ask your buddy, want lunch or me to refinish yoru slide... your choice...

Get some break free clp on that asap. Work it in with a soft tooth brush. It should come off.

CLP is a product that you can buy from just about any gun store or shooting range. Just go in and ask for it.

Dude! What are you doing leaving them in the car with an open window where someone could snag them? I not trying to stir anything up but what were you thinking? CLP will work fine, nobody snagged the firearms, you got lucky. c good

No offence, but I'm not that dumb. I live on a 43 acre ranch. If someone is dumb enough to come on the ranch uninvited they are going to get shot long before they can get away with a pistol. We never lock the house and the keys are in all the cars.

If ur intent on trying to make things right by fixing this, here's what CLP is.

CLP stands for Cleaner, Lubricant, Protectant. Breakfree is a particular brand of CLP. It's a VERY good brand of CLP. Get a small bottle of this, and put it on the gun with a rag. See if that removes the rust.

Dont' use anything more abrasive than a rag with some CLP on it. Try that for starters. If you dont have CLP, motor oil will work in a jam. But for pete's sake, dont let it sit there with rust. THe longer you leave rust on it, the higher the chance youll start to get pitting.

a little CLP + nylon brush + some elbow grease should take that right off.

If it doesnt come off you owe him to refinish the slide. Period. I'd try a little Hoppes gun oil and some 0000 steel wool. It worked on my P6 slide when i got it from turners with a bit of surface rust on it. LIGHTLY swipe it going in ONE direction with a oil saturated piece and it should come right off. Test it under the slide first to make sure it doesnt harm the finish.
Plus why could she use the "357 you had access to" with some factory standard load 38 special rounds? Cant get much lighter than that to learn on short of a 22.

You could do that but you'd be in deep doo doo. Keep the guns locked away when not in use. IF a minor had gotten to the guns you would be responsible.

Clean the gun ASAP as others have mentioned. If there is pitting, do your buddy right and get the slide refinished which may or may not reduce noticeable pitting.

CCR is having their fall sale for about $50-60.
