    surface rust after parkerizing AK

    Hello,

This crap showed up pretty quickly after parking, or maybe right away (I can't remember). I did put the receiver in wd40 for 2 days after parking. Is this rust? how should I get rid of it?

    Thx,

    Scott

Thx. what can I use to remove it? Not sure I want to scrape off the parking. Will evapo-rust work?

Hard to tell by the picture, but it looks like copper.

WD40 is not to be used for treating a parkerized gun, use an oil. Any decent oil will do the job. And don't use detergent motor oil...

Here's a better picture, I hope. I have some evapo rust. will this harm parkerizing?

Parkerizing is not a rust preventative
                      Oil is

                      Before anyone blows me up...

It is a maganese phosphate surface conversion
and it acts like a sponge - actually more like velcro if examined under a microscope
The more you oil it the better the prevention (works awesome for paint too)
This is why new parkerizing is rough and older arms are very smooth
WD40 is mostly solvent and evaporates quickly
Wipe it down with a good gun oil
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

you are correct and good oil should be used. I use a rust preventing penetrating oil.

After park and rinsing with water we dip the part in Walmart cheapest motor oil, then wrap in cling wrap.
Let it season for at least three to four days or longer.
Examine, add more motor oil if needed and season some more.
Later I occasionally wipe down with Ballistol or similar.
Don,t be too anxious to look at it, as exposing to oxygen is not nice.

FYI Parkerizing is not a surface conversion coating but a plating of phosphate metal (iron, zinc or manganese) that lays down a porous coating to better absorb oil.

Do not wrap it in plastic ever. you seal in the moisture and it will rust.
