First time I used my 20 ton HF press I was impressed (not) by the lateral slop.
I'm thinking of using that slick plastic you can get at Tap Plastics to shim both sides of the rails as to take some of that up. There's also a sticky backed thin plastic made for table saw fence jigs that may work as well
Anyone try anything like this?

Does the A-frame vs H-frame make any difference?

Honestly the 20 ton is probably your best bet. Sometimes i dont know how people get away with using the 12 ton.

my 12 ton has a lot of slop also.
I used some 1 inch flat stock I had. cut 4 pieces at 4 inches. bent 1 inch at 90 degrees. I just drop them in place and it takes up a lot of slop. the press works a lot better.

Where is this slop you are "finding" in the press? My HF 12 ton is 33 years old, maybe they were better made back then??? Anyway, as soon as the ram starts pushing, all movement in the individual press parts disappears and it's rock solid. Are you guys *****ing about what is happening before the ram touches?

The cross piece that the ram attaches to has a lot of slop where it bumps against the vertical struts. This slop is in both the X and Y axes. If you try anything delicate, like pressing a punch, it'll slip sideways as soon as it is loaded. The press works pretty well for most tasks after you've added shims to prevent this lateral movement.

Added diagonal bracing to the frame. Now the frame is rock solid and all the side to side slop is completely gone.

Yes. It's what I had on hand, and easily upgraded if needed. But I'd be surprised if it wasn't enough. The heaviest thing I've done was bending a Yugo flat and pressing out the barrel pin. When doing that, the press only tried to shift to the side a little bit. I could easily push the frame that much to the side with my hands when it was not loaded. So the sideways force is only a very tiny fraction of the downward force. This is plenty solid enough.
