Following is our AK build sequence

Please comment, and state pro's and con's of this sequence compared with
your experience.


AK Build Sequence

Only thing I see that I was taught to do differently is to headspace and drill the barrel pin before rivoting the front trunion. Also weld rails, rivot center support before rivoting rear trunion so that the receiver can flex a little bit to install the center support sleeve easier. Also the barrel can be populated before pressing into the trunion that way there is less chance of bending or damaging the receiver. Not saying this is the right or the only way, just the way I was taught. Most importantly, have fun!

Demill kit
Clean everything
populate and headspace barrel
bend flat
rivet trigger guard
weld rails
drill and ream axis pin holes
drill center support
install center support
rivet front trunnion
rivet rear trunnion
fit mag and cut down mag stabilizers
fit bolt, trim ejector
heat treat
press barrel back in and pin
verify headspace
blast and park
oil treatment
assemble
enjoy

obviously for folding stocks pin open
and if required install mag lock
and if it's a side folder install the catch and spring after a lesson in frustration for at least an hour

check mag fit
rivet trunnion
Rough trim mag guide tabs on rails
heat treat ejector
locate and weld rails
drill center support hole
install center support
Finish fit mag stabilizers
drill/ream and heat treat fcg holes
rivet rear trunnion

Rough trim mag guide tabs on rails

Finish fit mag stabilizers

This is how I do it:

Demil kit
Headspace and populate barrel
Remove trunion from populated barrel
Fold flat
Fit trunnions and tape rivets into place
Mill lower rails to proper width
Locate/Weld rails
drill center support hole
Drill/ream fire control holes
Rough trim ejector
Temporarily locate trigger guard
check mag fit
Check carrier fit with trunions clamped in place, adjusting rails if needed
Remove everything from receiver except rails
Heat treat whole receiver
Temper whole receiver
rivet trigger guard
Install center support with taped rivet
rivet trunnions
Rivet center support
Blast/parkerize assembled receiver separate from barrel
Press in barrel/barrel pin
Final assemble gun, mag lock before pistol grip

Excellent, that all sounds easy. I should be able to bust out my two kits in no time.. Thanks for the order to do which is very important, no kidding intended. Looking forward to getting started when I get back.

the big thing is getting the trigger guard on before the rails. It creates a real problem the other way.

With the ak builder trigger guard rivet jig the press plate that goes inside the receiver fits better without the rails in. On the 1.5 receivers it won't fit at all.

yeah the little gizmo to crush the rivets don't fit worth a damn. better to weld rails in after the fact. at least in this case it is.

Oh, I ground mine the first time I ran into that so that it fits next to the hammer spacer now.
I didn't realize that everyone else didn't just do that too...

I've cut several out of flat stock, but I am forever misplacing them. Plus at build parties we were frequently using other peoples tools and I sure as sh*t ain't taking a grinder to any part of it. Eventually I think we just developed the habit of doing the TG first to streamline the process.
