    I need a LIFE!!
    • Nov 2011

I'm glad to see that some here do get it.
Fact is places like Ares only charge $60 (or at least they did) I was going to charge $100. and I was thinking of making it a $100 fee up to two parts so it's bang for your buck. If I'm already set up for it, popping one more in there and running it again is no big deal. It's the initial set up. And those that know, Setup time is where the money is spent.

Yari I here you on cycle times. I had the dubious job of setting up a CNC mil once to run a bunch of 6AL4 Titanium parts. trying to get the speeds, feeds and depth of cut correct to increase tool life and maintain a usable finish was a night mare.

    I think I need a beer...

So my asking price now has not changed in two years. But it's the same old story. You quote the price and they choke. Not even worth my effort. I've heard of so many guys going to build parties and someone screw up the zero and hole end up out of spec. You think people would pay more for individual attention to detail. Not to mention my warranty. If I set it up and screw it up it comes out of my pocket I replace it. I think these guys are looking for a machinist whore or something. someone they can go to for quick dirty cheep work, Well i don't work that way.

Maybe that is what this should be. is more of a justification of the cost. but damn guys go find someone willing to help out in a situation like this. Very far and few between.

Sorry guys for getting pissed but it's just frustrating as all hell. I'm sticking my neck out and they want to pay peanuts??? no way. Pay a fair price or take your stuff elsewhere

Some people will never understand, sucks that this class is being canceled but I see things from your p.o.v.

I'm a machinist myself and setup is where the money is made

          Hope that helps.
Under the current opinion letter from the BATFE that would still be a no no.

Thats why I was saying a "training class" and if someone project just so happened to be a lower no big deal. see in the training class there is no machine rental, you are not buying machine time you are being educated on machine tool practices while working on a project of or choice. at least that the idea.
I don't know maybe I need to think this over a bit more before i go cutting everyone off before it's even off the ground. I just don't want to get caught up in a machine rental game when it was clearly stated that this was a concept, and idea, and nothing more....... I was testing the waters. We'll see guys

I was under the impression that most of those shops that were issued a letter was due to them manufacturing and selling the 80% in the same shop they were offering the build parties at?

I know that there are still shops out there that are still offering cnc services , but they are also low key and not advertising it to the whole world on Radio networks , Magazines , Etc , etc.....

Ares armor received a letter that basically said that if the manufacturer (individual) didn't own the machine it was illegal and this is why everyone is skittish about it. they basically said now renting of machinery even manual machines. So that was were this idea originated from.

you would not be paying for machine time. I'd give you a quick class in programming you show up with part and print do a little CNC work learn how to set up the part and indicate it in. Something the CNC shops won't show you as a lot of these guys were after a fast buck. Yeah I'm looking to make some money too. but I'm also doing this for the same reason I help with AK builds Because Kevin DeLeon with crap his pants. Even the Federal government is smart enough to leave the home built issue alone. This problem of Ghost guns as they call them. They created the problem. this would not be an issue if we were allowed to buy the weapons we want. No one is building machine guns in mass so this population of Ghost gun builders is also law abiding.
This just shows the real reason the real motives and the real purpose behind these bills and laws. It is to disarm California. This whole fallacy that they are doing this for public safety is BS, They banned a weapon that had no criminal record in the state of California and I'm not sure but I believe nation wide.

They Banned a bolt action rifle a .50BMG. Not once have i ever heard of one of these weapons being used in a crime. yet they still banned it on the premiss that it is in the interest of public safety. BS these people are out to get every single weapon we own. and no they will not go door to door to get them. They won't have to. Once all the weapons are banned either directly or indirectly as in the .50BMG then it will be on to shooting centers where high levels of heavy metals will be found and it will be in the interest of public safety to shut these cancer causing places down. then you have no where to shoot. Then these idiots will try to make it illegal to possess weapon in public.
Then they can pass a law to stop and search for firearms and confiscate right there and then. See the thing is everybody thinks they will send cops to your door. They don't have too. Everything can be done indirectly.

              Rant off.

So again guys this is not a go yet but most likely will be soon.

Not a rant ... what you speak of is the sad state of affairs in California today. I am hoping that we can get through this nonsense.

I just want to be clear here. I need to cover my time. I have one machine that's 2D CNC with a manual tool changer and no fixtures. It takes takes time to do it right. My shop rate is $55 per hour and it takes more then an hour to do this. And I'm not try to gouge people either the price I quoted is a fair price. Once tooling, electricity, and clean up are taken into account I end up with $20 to go by a 12 pack. Not to mention I have to take jobs out of the mill that are paying good money to be there. Nope no thanks.
I don't think I'll be offering training to anyone but my friends.
Sorry guys but the response I've gotten so far hasn't changed and it's not worth the trouble.
                  Valley pm me bro.
That is kind of sad, it takes me about 45 min. to finish one on me Bridgeport.

                      Someday.....

Someday, after I recover financially from the scare of 2013, and find a place in my garage amongst all the hoarded stuff.

Proxxon Micro Mill, Model MF 70

I had a mill class in college (Manufacturing Engineering, 1988) and operated one a little bit in 2003 at the Jim Russell Race Mechanics Program. It's really not too hard. Measure pocket depths carefully and don't damage your jig.

45 min from bare table or 45 min from a setup 80%?

For leagal reasons you would have to own and do the work your self. Now. If you had a jig, take a gun smith or shop class at a junior college! You would get all the help you need and collage credit too!

Thats the point here training not a plug and play.

Well that's pretty slow cause i can do my own in twenty minutes or less. thats with no jig, indicating it in, machining the pocket, flipping on it side and indicating again to drill axis holes. Twenty minutes tops. But I know WTF i'm doing and can operate a Bridgeport blindfolded. Now with teaching someone the set up, having them do all the work, the machine will only go as fast as they feel comfortable with. On top of me stoping them once in a while to make sure mistakes aren't being made. it adds up

PM's sent to those that posted an Interest.
I'll put together a work sheet for the class and a test. All scheduling and fees will be discussed through PM's only. There will be no negotiation of price for the class. take it or leave it. it's up to you. I must emphasize that this will be a class. Kinda like an intro to machining and CNC programming.

Being on the list is not a guaranteed spot. Those with low post counts will be heavily scrutinized and you may be required to produce references.
