I've always wanted to learn how to operate a CNC machine. on a side note, you can put down that you have CNC machine experience on your resume!

No you can't. That's like saying you took a "race day" and now you know how to run an LMP car. You'll enjoy the experience and you will learn something but the biggest thing you will learn is how much information you need to know to actually have any idea what you are doing.weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.

You saw that too... I about had coffee come fly out my nose.No you can't. That's like saying you took a "race day" and now you know how to run an LMP car. let just say you would have had the experience of a CNC but you would not have CNC experience. But resume just mean lies anyway so what would it matter. Anybody we hired at our shop was tested. Math and on the machine. You were given one shot, fail to complete the test unaided and you walk. It was a basic test but it would show us what kind of a machinist you were.Comment

Still sitting in the top of the Gerstner. I need to order some more Cerokote and get this thing finished.

That's weird. I know someone(not me of course) who finished several 80% lowers just last week. They do exist but the places that still do rent out their machines require you to bring the file on a thumb drive and they help you set everything up on the jig.
Hope that helps.Comment

I hate to say but this is going just the same as it did a while back when I was offering it. A few people excluded most don't want to pay for the time involved. I quote a price and that's the last I hear from anyone. Why is it that the AK crowd will pay good money for build help but not the AR crowd??
I just want to be clear here. I need to cover my time. I have one machine that's 2D CNC with a manual tool changer and no fixtures. It takes takes time to do it right. My shop rate is $55 per hour and it takes more then an hour to do this. And I'm not try to gouge people either the price I quoted is a fair price. Once tooling, electricity, and clean up are taken into account I end up with $20 to go by a 12 pack. Not to mention I have to take jobs out of the mill that are paying good money to be there. Nope no thanks.
I don't think I'll be offering training to anyone but my friends.
Sorry guys but the response I've gotten so far hasn't changed and it's not worth the trouble.

So true. But I pay for my AR also.Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Wow - sorry to hear that class has been cancelled. Although I completely understand. I used to do airbrush work for the local RC community. Some people understand that there is a reason not everybody does this and why it costs as much as it does. Others don't and that's why I'm currently doing exactly what you are doing and only catering to a very select few. Best of luck and definitely keep me posted if classes resume.Stop calling them Lawmakers. It only encourages them.Comment

This is because very few people have to take shop anymore so they have a fundamental disconnect between how much time and money they think something takes vs how long it actually takes. Buying cheap crap off the internet doesn't help this either.
An AR lower is $135 at my LGS, if you handed me a forged lower blank it would take me at least two days to turn it into a lower. I'm slow and not very good but I am good enough that i could do it and it'd be in spec. Do the math.weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.

Rice Man The class never started . It was an idea. Then I get hammered with PM's and I explain the time line this thing may have occurred in and the cost which was exactly what I was charging before the alphabet squad shut down the build parties. So my asking price now has not changed in two years. But it's the same old story. You quote the price and they choke. Not even worth my effort. I've heard of so many guys going to build parties and someone screw up the zero and hole end up out of spec. You think people would pay more for individual attention to detail. Not to mention my warranty. If I set it up and screw it up it comes out of my pocket I replace it. I think these guys are looking for a machinist whore or something. someone they can go to for quick dirty cheep work, Well i don't work that way.
Maybe that is what this should be. is more of a justification of the cost. but damn guys go find someone willing to help out in a situation like this. Very far and few between.
Sorry guys for getting pissed but it's just frustrating as all hell. I'm sticking my neck out and they want to pay peanuts??? no way. Pay a fair price or take your stuff elsewhereComment

I've noticed the same attitude here more than anywhere else. If you made your service free people would still complain.Comment

^ that is so true.
I like this one "wait why's your program take 15 min when the other guys take 10?"... "What's a finish pass? What are feeds and speeds?"
These fools don't realize that the end mill cutting their 80 cost about the same price. If I can cut 100 at 15 min vs 40 at 10 what do you think I'm going to do? Then again I never had lines around the block.Comment

I do find it kind of funny that the lowly parts kit rebuilders are more willing to spend the $ and the barbiedoll guys wince at your pricing. Been to a bunch of AKBPs before the "mother jones dbag" and never heard any one whine about the $90.00 barrel population or the $80.00 BP fee, and that was the cattle boat 15 builder gigs, no CNC, just a press, bench top drill press, and a few riveting jigs.Comment
