    Mauser front sight mounting question

I would like to restore this VZ-24 to shooting condition preferably with iron sights, but there appears to be some external barrel work done to it making mounting the original sights impossible. Does anybody have any ideas on what is the best option?

    Thanks in advance!

Sleeve it and machine it to match. or cut it off, recrown and fit a new sight. The tapper in the barrel over that short of a distance will not be more then one thousandth .001" of an inch so a original sight will fit.

I may try that, I would like to avoid cutting it off, but I appreciate your input!

I don't know what kind of tools you have but you could make a sleeve pretty easy with little more then a drill press a hack saw and a file. if you can take some accurate measurements I could make you a sleeve for cheep. Could even make it from pre hardened 4140 not that it's needed.
I would need an accurate OD/ID and length. $25 shipped

The other thing is you may want to check your replacement front sight it may be set up for that step. as in that may be original. Due to this image

That's what it looks like with the military sight removed. It's soldered on after the set screw is tightened. If you are replacing the military sight with a sporter sight, Williams used to make one.

I'm trying to install the stock sight (which I have). Am I just stupid, or is this altered?

I will possibly PM you Kcstott.

If you were stupid, you wouldn't be asking questions.
It's not altered, the front sight was just removed. Simple job to re-install. Is the rear sight still in place? If it's not, you'll want to re-install it first.

The front sight has just been removed... The standard front sight is part of a sleeve which fits over the smaller diameter muzzle area..... You see once the barrel is installed in the receiver and the rear sight is in place the front sight was installed and aligned with the rear sight.....

Swedish Mauser rifles use a similar arrangement.....

In the first pic below is a unissued Swedish M/96 barrel... You can see the muzzle has a area of reduced diameter. The front sight and collar fit over this area, and is then silver soldered in place when proper alignment is achieved .The second pic is of the barrel and the rear sight which also need s to be soldered in place after the barrel is properly installed and headspaced.

SVT-40, good pic showing the details.
"If" it's silver solder, it's a low silver content, because it doesn't take much heat to make it flow. You do it with a propane torch, and if you're careful, you won't even mess up the blue. I've tinned them with electrical solder, and never had one come loose.

Its soft solder that they used to put sights on.
I have taken a few off with a propane torch .

Okay, I'm going to look into it. I have the front sight (actual point of sight),and sight protector. I must be missing something...

I installed the rear sight back onto the barrel, but when the hole in the barrel and sight base line up, it's canted badly to the right. Should I just by ads te set screw, and make it straight, or is this a needed feature?

Thanks everybody, all the information is appreciated.
