Colorado School of Trades has an excellent course.

Here in CA, Lassen College, in Susanville is said to have a gunsmith's course.

How is it? I'm 4 weeks in to machinist training, really enjoying it . Some classmates and myself are interested in working in the firearms industry after we finish.

Stick with the machinist training and see if you can get a Tool making apprenticeship.

The reason is Money. You will gain far more knowledge about how to make parts properly how they fit and why then you ever will taking a gunsmith course. And you will make more money.

Do the gunsmith stuff on the side as a hobby. Get to a point where you can open your own shop if you like.

I'm a veteran Tool maker myself and have never wanted for work

Thanks for the advise and encouragement, I am definitely sticking to becoming a machinist. Most the guys from my school are getting hired 2-3 weeks before graduation. it was just a month ago i had no idea how to read blueprints and now I can't wait to get the next prints!

Check out Lassen Community College Gunsmithing Program. They have a 2 year degreed program and they offer summer courses. I am in the 2 year degree program and its the real deal. You learn everything from making your own tools to machining, TIG welding, caustic blueing, spring making and all kinds of other stuff. There is plenty of money in gunsmithing, you just have to really learn and know the trade. I have not even graduated and I have plenty of work. Check it out as summer classes are available for registration now. Hope this helps

I did check out the website, really cool stuff! I'm committed to my current schooling here in So Cal at the moment. I should be graduating in October, then I can look in to other schooling. Colt does recruit from our school as well, but I've heard it's not as much fun as it sounds. Some of the guys in class are thinking of picking up some AR 80% and try finishing them on the conventional mills, but not sure if we'd get in trouble.

Get em and mill them. Just make sure you do it for yourself! Its pretty easy. Ive milled plenty of lowers by hand with out jigs or CNC. Machining is my favorite part of gunsmithing and if you have machining skills you can pick up the gunsmithing aspect quickly. Anyway keep us posted.

I just graduated from NTMA! ontario campus. Job market is good if you pay attention and take advantage of the studies. Out of my class, only three of us are working. I graduated two months ago.

No gun stuff at ntma. AT ALL. the president is big time anti. He will kick you out without a chance to go back. I have seen it. This guy was tapering a 16" bull barrel. Was not pretty.

I'm interested in this field, what type of money can a freshly trained machinist make out of school?
