Front sight post will not go low enough

I have a Troy Industries front sight. I have it bottomed out and still shooting about 6 inches low at 100 yards. It's the spring loaded stop that prevents it from going lower--that is bottoming out.

I see I have two options--

    1. Take a little off the top of the sight post.
    2. Take some off the bottom of the spring loaded stop.

I'd either use a file or a Dremel tool.

It seems option 2 would give the better looking results. Before I start removing metal figured I ask.

    Thanks for the help.

I use Troy sights on all of my rifles, and also zero my irons so that POA=POI at 100 yards and I have never run out of adjustment on a front sight.

What rear sight do you have?

Personally I am not a fan of removing metal because once you start, you can't really go back unless you know how to weld?

You can try changing out the front sight post. The picture is a set of KNS Precision front sight posts... I ordered mine from Amazon and I really like the ball sight post (the smallest one)... I know it is not free like modifying the post but this will give you options...

I know dumb question, but couldn't you just aim higher? Or are you trying to do a 100 yard zero? Forgive my ignorance and I'm sure someone with more experience will be input shortly.

I'm guessing you may have bought the wrong front sight.

They usually make two versions- one longer one that mounts to the gas block, and a shorter one to mount to the same rail as the rear sight.

If you put a gas block sight on a picatinny rail, it'll be way too tall- 'm guessing just enough for 6" low @ 100 yards.

I definitely got the one for the gas block--should have mentioned in the first post that it is a gas block mount. Gas block sits lower than the flattop rail and therefore the sight sits higher to compensate.

The rear is also troy industries and does not have elevation adjustment. So, not lots of flexibility.

Yes, I could aim higher, but seems best to have a good 100 yard.

Looking at things a bit closer, it could be the spring is going solid (using all the space between the coils), and that is keeping it from going lower. Investigating that now.

I'd bet you it's your gas block as they are not standard. I ran into this problem with two AR's I built two years ago. The gas block was to short causing issues. So in doing research I found front gas block height all over the map.

Sounds to me your gas block it too high.

That's my guess too--the gas block. Since a replacement post is only a few dollars I think I'll just take a little off the top of the post. Messing around with the spring loaded stop is a bit more work and I don't know if it is the spring or stop.

              Thanks for all the responses.
