I thought they were milling to mil spec... I just compared the rifle lowers I have to the one in question, Daniel Defense, Aero, Palmetto, and Rifle Gear. None of them are any different than the others... since they are all mil spec... 1.5 mm is not "minor fitting".Comment

So sorry about this brother. This to be honest is one of my fears in getting an 80% and then trying to find someone to mill it. I may just get a milling machine and mill myself. By the looks... it my have been off center hence the 1.5mm shift. By the looks... the lack of metal where the buffer tube is should not effect the fitting of the upper reciever unless the pins do not line up. However you may need to mill out the excess in order to fit the hammer.
P.S. On a side note.... did you paint that or is it anno'd that color?Last edited by saint7; 12-05-2012, 11:58 PM.Comment

Sounds like it was not clamped properly or the tooling got out of zero.. No problems with fit for the upper right?
Could always just try a dremel if its only a little out.. if not I'm sure someone on here will come to the rescue with an end mill..I too am planning on finishing the 80% that I have.. Will deff be on the look out for this.. what about the trigger grove in the bottom ?? Where does that line up in comparison to the trigger guard?

Dremel..... that to me does not sound like fun. Most of us to be honest are lazy and hate anything hard in nature. Much rather gargle with acid or gouge my eyes out with rusty nails than to dremel Aluminum...LOL. Just being sarcastic... pay no attention to me... but to be honest... I would take it back to them if you do not live to far and have them touch it up on their dime.
LOL...most if not all want to do the push button method when it comes to doing these 80% paper weights. I am a lazy, broken bodied veteran... and that is how I would like mine done. I should not say lazy.... just broken and tired.
Bad *** paint job brother. What did it set you back? and... did you get to watch how he did it?Last edited by saint7; 12-06-2012, 12:49 AM.Comment

Wow brother... that sucks. I plan on doing a few of these and though I get lazy at times... I may pick up a milling machine and do it myself. I figure if I do a few and have family come over and do theirs as well... is should pay for itself in no time. In your case... I would take it back to them and have them fix it... especially if you paid for it.
Also... that Cerakote... they have a couple of DIY vids on Youtube... I also have an old airbrush laying around. May just do it to mine as it came out real nice. Should be no different than the camo we used to do our rifles.... just a few more steps and oven baking... just like baking cookies...
Hope you get if fixed brother.Comment

They also have a shake and spray kit for 30.00 I had seen in anothe vid. Just may give it a shot. Just the lower and upper and leave everything else black to accent it....
Yea for me with having to rent a car, food, gas, most likely stay the night in a hotel and we are a party of 5... LOL wife, me and three little crumb snatchers. It would be a little bit.
Lets see,
250 car/gas rental live by palm springs
200 for lodging
150 for food b, l and dinner for 5
600.00 bucks right there....LOL
can get a mill for about 800.00

According to Are's Facebook, they should be doing BP's on the 6th, but if that doesn't happen it shouldn't be too long before they start back up.Originally posted by MilkSteakYeah, I totally agree. This was my main fear with an 80%.. my thinking was the build party would ensure having it done exactly to spec.
Unfortunately now its looking like I need to go out and either find a mill to use or buy one.
Called ares Wednesday afternoon and they said they have no estimate when their machine shop will be back up and running.
Oh, and I had it cerakoted/painted. The guy I went to did an awesome job on it. Matches magpul FDE furniture perfectly.HM2(FMF) Earl

Ahh don't forget Cerakote if done properly will add 0.001 to the surface as well. So since you fitting something inside the receiver your will lose 0.002 of space because each interor wall with be 0.001 thicker.Comment

It just sucks, probably will be an all day thing like when I had this milled if I don't get there right when the line starts.
Im really hoping I don't travel down there to just to find out its not repairable and I just wasted $75 on cerakote for a paper weight.
Yea that does suck, but it will probably just be to mill out the front a little bit more. As long as the pin holes are good to go you should be fine. Just make sure the jig is really clean before you put it in and the cerakote on the outside shouldn't get screwed up. The extra milling on the back shouldn't effect anything because there isn't really much pressure pushing against the buffer retainer, and you didn't really have to have it milled that far back anyway, since you aren't using a full auto sear.Last edited by Tjfearl; 12-06-2012, 1:49 AM.HM2(FMF) Earl

Easy fix for the thick area. Use a dremel with a sanding drum and go slow. The larger size drum is close to the same radius as the inside of the fcg corners.Comment
