While its collector value would be higher in un-molested original condition if it were mine I'd weld it up and completely refinish it. Its still a 1918 gun and it looks like it has all the original markings.

That said befire I did anything I'd someone like call Cylinder & Slide for thier opinion. The owner recently reproduced the original gun down the very last detail and would have good info on its value and collectability in both forms. It can be welded. Then filed smooth and rebelled. But the value will be gone. Plus after revaluing, it will not look old.

Keep in mind welding it up and re-parking MAY not remove the cut marks due to the different metals. I have had lighter park results show up after welding.

Along with Pachmayr Hogue ,http://www.getgrip.com/ , I have used the pachmayr and replaced them with the hogue. A world of difference. I love mine.

If you aren't ready to weld and sand, then you could just fill with some type of epoxy filler and spray a coating on the gun.

I'm just enough of a treasure hunter to want to believe those grooves were cut by a soldier and increases the value in that regard. But who knows?

You could have it repaired, I don't think it would be that much work and with some research the weldor might be able to match up the steel. I believe the steel was called "ordinance steel", not really anything special. Use an old coat hanger for filler wire.
The problem is gonna be with how many passes it will take to fill all that in, it's gonna create a lot of shrinkage which shouldn't crack the frame but might due to stress.

I don't think I'd be so quick to want to sell it and I'm amazed at the value it has in the condition it is in, that is if some felon got ahold of it and did that to it instead of a soldier.
