    80% build question

If I do a 80% ar15 build can I send it to be anodized after it is done?
Does the plater have to have a ffl?

If the plating shop won't do the work while you wait, then they need an FFL to work on a firearm.

I prefer to buy pre-anodized 80%s and laser etch any markings I want.

If you want ATF spec markings, you can engrave the lower before finishing then anodize and cut the FCG last so that neither the engraver nor plating shops need an FFL to handle your 80%.

anodizing is a manufacturing process, not gunsmithing. If you anodize after you cut it, they need to be FFL.

I have done 2 80%'ers and I had them coated AFTER I was completely done. If you do it before you mill it, you will end up with the FCG area still raw.

There are plenty of places that will anodize for you while you wait. It's usually about $20 or so. I had both of mine duracoated instead of anodizing.

You're actually wrong about this. It's not a manufacturing process and no FFL is required to anodize it. It's not gunsmithing necessarily either.

As long as you wait with the receiver it's no problem. You just can't ship a receiver to a non-ffl, that's where the trouble is. If you can find someone who will do it while you wait, you're fine.

Actually there is a requirement for Gunsmiths and manufactures.

It just has to do with the wording of the ATF laws. but that doesn't apply here.

80% is not a firearm and can be shipped to anyone anywhere
Once the FCG is done, If it is going to be shipped it must go to a shop with an FFL.
And the FFL can't farm out the work. At least not according to the ATF. They want there tax money and they want everyone that work on guns or gun part to be an FFL.

*ignore the mispelling in the heading. autocorrection was on.
I have yet to see a place that will do it while you wait.
