of course I'd need the 922 compliance parts and a drill fixture but I've got everything else to build if this is all that I would need.

Yes. The quality of rifle depends on your ability. I don't think the selector difference is an issue.

what will make it easier? I have the ability to harden, and weld and drill. but don't have a press. the drilling fixtures are way cheaper than the bending fixtures. I have no idea why bending would be easier. since in 4 comments thats the recommendation. I have no problems following that advice. I'm just trying to learn here.

It's easier with a flat but the tooling is expensive. If you don't have access to the tooling the pre bent is just fine. All you have to do is go slow and file the top rails to fit. I did a few of the early flats and they run fine.

Drilling all the necessary holes in the bent 80% blank will be more challenging then just the trunnion holes if you bend a flat. That being said AK-Builder created a tool to do just that. The only advantage to the bent 80% shells is that they are real AK shells and can be sent out to be heat treated as a non firearm provided you haven't drilled any holes yet.

Seriously? Good carbide tools with lube will cut through the hardened shell with no issues at all. Now trying that with whatever comes with the AK-Builder kit is another thing.

Buy a flat for 20.00. I have all the tools and jigs to get you setup. Send me a PM, I'm in your area. I was gonna start building one of my Egyptian kits soon, so it's not a big deal to have a tag a long. I don't have a 5.45 headspace guage, so if it really worries you, you need to get your own. I do charge beer.
