Saiga Barrel Threading / Ak Barrel Threading Done Rite

    Saiga Barrel Threading
Got two Saiga’s from separate parts of the country and they look like the same guy worked on them. I think they visit the same forums.
The owner attempted to remove the sleeve from the front site block.

    Pulled the barrels

Remove the site blocks, took measurements for the customers flash hiders.

I make my own little tool for the press process.

Using a barrel stub I affix the site block to it

Beware the leader who bangs the drums of crises and patriotism...it emboldens the blood and narrows the mind. When the drums have reached a fever pitch...the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry...rather, in...fused with fear, they will offer up all of their rights...and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. (Julius Caesar)

I always cut the threads on a AK between centers.

Completed I think they look way better.

Your compound looks like it's a little more than 59 1/2 degrees? Did you make a spud for the chamber to center?

            Very nice work

I can't wait until I get my hands on a lathe. It would make life sooooooo much easier.

However.... To give the home builder with limited tools some hope ( and in no way to steal the thunder of your very nice work posted above).

It can be done (and done well) with simple tools.

Yugo RPK barrel cut to 18" re-profiled in the drill press, re-crowned with Brownells crowning tools (hand tools), and re-threaded by running the die off a barrel stub, and onto the new profile of the cut barrel to keep the threads straight with the bore.

The above rifle work was done by a (pretty green when it comes to AKs) builder (under my tutoring) in my shop.
It started life as a virgin M72 kit from RGuns.
The builder took instruction well, took his time, and produced a beautiful, and accurate rifle.

              29 1/2 not 59 1/2
If set a 59 1/2 it would not have the half degree of clearance it would be set at 30 1/2 and tear the threads.

Either way it looks like the compound was set at 45 degrees. Not good for single point threads

The compound was set @ 29.5 degrees guys. I moved it to its current position after the threads were cut.

Is the compound supposed to be angle the other way for lefthand threads? For left hand threading the tool moves left to right.. not trying to play stump the machinist just making and observation
