    AK Pistol

SO I bought a kit on ak files of a romanian ak pistol.

    Question:

If it's just a kit and you order a receiver for it you don't have to get a sled for it right?

You ordered a pistol receiver? Good luck that.

To answer your question, yes a single/no shot sled is required when you build up that pistol. If it's just a kit, no.

Can you buy a receiver to fit from NDS? Does it have to have a sled to register it? Or is it registered as a long rifle?

Best way is to fold your own receiver, then comply with the single shot exception.
It's kinda problematic to get an AK receiver DROS'ed as a pistol...
        oh this...
        It's a Single Cylinder - Single Stroke,
        Internal Combustion Engine,
        with a Free Floating Piston...

Without going through the entire legal reasoning, it is best to build an AK pistol on a home built receiver.

Any home built pistol has to be built in a roster exempt configuration which means dimensionally compliant single shot for an AK pistol. That means 6"+ barrel, zero round magazine and a magazine lock.

After that roster exemption is satisfied, you can convert to a semi-auto repeater but you still have to abide by the California pistol "assault weapon" ban which generally means it needs a fixed magazine with a 10 or less round capacity.

There is no legal shortcut around SSE or the AWB.

Actually what you can do as well is just not cut the magazine stabilizers on the rails. This will prevent a magazine from being loaded satisfying the single shot compliance.
But the question has come up "Well how do you prove it was single shot" and a sled is a good investment in that case. But I say "Prove I didn't shingle shot it".

Either way the gun must be built as a single shot first with a folded receiver or a NDS makes no difference.

That is a bad idea, as one can insert a single stack AK mag in there.

The burden of proof lies upon the state in any manufacturing an unsafe handgun prosecution.

That's why I say do SSE but don't even attempt to document it. If the state has nothing, that is the best defense. On the same topic, don't say anything incriminating either. If a lot of questions are asked, refer them to your firearm lawyer.

I have not been following this as closely as in the past... As related to CA DOJ, how do you recommend transitioning a NDS receiver from a rifle per DROS to a single shot exempt pistol. Are we now allowed to DROS receivers as other?

                  What Have I Missed?

You have to find one that is defined as other on the paperwork and just because I mentioned a NDS doesn't mean there is one listed as other. if it is sold as a rifle receiver its a no go. as Far as I know there is no way to legally use a rifle receiver to build a pistol. Other then a demill and reweld and even then it might be iffy
