1919 build

Has anyone tried a 1919 build? I dont plan on doing one but a web site caught my eye and they appear to be fairly basic. I was curios how much sugar coating there was and if its really difficult.

Did a couple last year, very straight forward. I had no prior metal working or finishing experience at all, but was able to complete the builds without any issues. Very rewarding experience; the results are like any craft project, take your time and it'll come out fine.

Dechan did you build it with an 80% side plate or 100%? This is starting to sound as if it may be fun to do. Its seems like parts kits are going up in price maybe I will have to consider this. I was looking at these and it seems like hot rivets would be easier to do than the cold ones. Also with the price of 308 sounds if 30 06 may be the way to go as well. Any one else with info on this I truly do appreciate it. Im still not fully committed to doing this but the wheels are definitely turning up stairs.

Ive done 2 80% builds and they are not that hard to do. Have fun!

easy to do. fun to shoot. Just follow the instructions. you can machine your way into constructive possesion if you do certain steps out of order (and that is bad)

most builds WERE with 80% plates. But I think the only thing you can buy now are 100% (thank the ATF)

for 30.06 you will need a different barrel and barrel bearing (about $100 for both, look at sarco inc)

First build (the a4 pictured) was with a 80% plate. They really should be called 95% plates because you just need to drill a few holes, all the machining is done. Maybe because of that, one place that was manufacturing 80% plates got raided just about the time I started the 2nd build a month later, everyone else got scared and the supply of 80% plates completely dried up. So I did the second build (the a6) with a 100% plate from Allied Armament. I don't know what the current situation is.

Highly recommend the guy on 1919a4.com to do your machining of the internals. Great price, incredibly fast (I think he does it the night he receives your parts and sends them back the next day), and he'll even sell you the semi-auto parts at the best price around. He goes by 30calmachinegunner on the site.

By avoiding any machine work, I started out with no tools and only had to get (all from Harbor Freight) a sand blasting cabinet, a disk sander and a 3lb hammer (for the trunion rivets). I also bought a stainless pan from my local restaurant supply company, and the drill bit set (mainly for chamfering the 80% plate) from the 1919a4 website. Finally, a jug of parkerizing solution from Brownells.

BTW, the a4 has an 06 barrel installed, and the 308 as a spare. To use the 308 barrel, I just swap out the barrel, barrel bushing and put in the front guide. 06 barrels are little harder to find, but as you mentioned, 06 is cheaper than 308 now.

Oh, and avoid talking to Tlillard23. He brought one of his builds to the range last year, I saw it, started ordering kits, parts and guns the next day and haven't been able to stop since.

dachan, 3 questions. 1. What spade grips are those? 2. What tripod is that? It looks like the Badger Bob setup. 3. When you take your 1919's out, do the range guys give you a hard time? I'm about to order my stuff from KMP to finish my Izzy kit.

My builds don't have any spade grips, you may be looking at FEDUPWBS' builds. And if you are asking about the M2 tripod, I got mine from Ohio Ord. It's GI, a little pricey, and required refinishing, but authentic. Iron Creations makes a nice, very cost effective one if you just want a basic tripod. As for shooting it, I go to a county owned range run by the County Parks and Rec Dept. Haven't had any problems, but I've been shooting and volunteering down there for almost 20yrs. In fact, one of the rangers bought my unfired Allied Armament 1919, which I had ordered last year during their sale (in case my builds didn't turn out). I think the closest the 1919 comes to CA laws is that the links are considered hi-cap devices, and unless you can show that you owned them before 1/1/2000, you can only legally put 10rnds together at a time.

R-Guns still lists Izzy kits on their website at a very good price. My second build was with one of their kits. The quality was just a tad lower than my first kit from Ohio Ord, who are now showing SO on 1919 kits.

No problems at the ranges I have taken mine too. I use links, 10 a belt here in CA, as long as I like when I travel.
