Like I've posted before, this is the main reason why I've stayed out of the whole OLL (Gray area) firearms. I don't know enough about it to even venture into it. That and the lack of skill to build of course. lol. I have way too much to lose. But it sure is fun to know about them. Just call me curious...

More power to those that understand and build them!!! I hope to see one of those Mac types or whatever they are called at the range someday.

The cobray M11/9 was never produced by MAC neither was the PM12-380 or the PM11/9

Aditionally, no guns are banned by 'series' now (which is why we can have AR's and AK's)

My gun is an AJAX ARMS A00001 not a 'mac type'

This thread is full of bad info.

Home built pistols are exempt from drop safety testing (only pistols manufactred for sale are subject to that requirement). They are also exempt from registration requirements, waiting periods, and exise tax.

I'm not the only guy who's made one, several other guys on here have homebuilt closed bolt 9mm's

They are very easy to build, you just need a few decent tools and be a good welder (technically you can have someone else help you weld it, so long as you are physically present during the construction)

I need to get a new hammer for mine (when i made the custom pins for it, it altered the engagement angle of the sear plate/hammer and made it unsafe to fire) but once I've picked one up I'll have to throw a "Calguns Come Play with AJAX's Toys" day at the range

That way y'all can shoot my shorty mosin nagant, the m11/9, my AMD65 ak pistol, and the blood damaged 1991A1 and some of the other stuff.

Or you can just build your own toys and we can all play with those

I started my build, i have to do finishing touches, i dunno i found it was easy to weld but then again i fabricate parts for my classic mustang so i have tons of experience wiht metalsmithing, there are parts kits i got mine for $250 plus lower parts mag well $25 and flat was i think $50ish so 325 plus labor etc, as for my understanding of homebuildt guns as long as it is compliant with the state and fed laws yoru good, so cali no threaded barrel and since the mag well is in the pistol grip there is no foreward pistol grip so its a okay, just make sure you dont have a stock on it, and your under **** i forget i think under 16" or 14" for barrel, like i said mines not complete right now still working on stuff and havnt had much free time,

Ajax is there a way you can take a pic of the inside of the lower, i believe you were helping me with assembly a while back.

Sava6e... so over $325 for the whole build huh? wow not bad!!! Where did you get your parts kit from? What does it mean that it has to fire from a "Closed Bolt"? Does that mean... Single Shot?

Not quite. Closed bolt guns operate with the bolt closed and are usually either striker or hammer fired weapons. Open bolt guns, such as the MAC type or Thompsons, are open bolt where the bolt is held open until the trigger is pulled. The main difference being that when you pull the trigger on a closed bolt gun it either releases the hammer or striker and ignites the primer, where as on an open bolt pulling the trigger releases the bolt which slams home and usually fires under it's own inertia or hits a sear along the way that releases the hammer of striker automatically upon closing. Open bolt guns were originally designed because of their ease to produce and as a safety feature to prevent accidental cook offs of a chambered round after extended periods of fire. Open bolt guns are now illegal to manufacture because of their ease to be converted to full auto (sometimes removing a single part and on one particular MAC type model putting a nickle behind the trigger guard - seriously) but the older ones can still be bought.

As for the topic, it's questionable. Some people say it is, some people say it isn't. Personally I am leery of making pistols but then again someone just recently registered their home brew pistols so it's kin of hard to argue that. Proceed at your own risk but understand that it IS grey area.
