Can TRP frontstrap be calmed down?

Can the sharp machine checkering on a Springfield TRP be dulled, filed, etc so it is more like a Sig or S&W 1911 with mellow machine checkering? I assume it would have to be re-blued. Thanks

sig and S&W are 30 lpi (lines per inch) SA does 25 lpi. hence the rough texture.

the sharp burs can smoothed out with 400 grit sandpaper, but better to just let your hands get used to it.

I think the 25lpi can be done in such a manner that it doesn"t result in thousands of tiny knives pressing into my delicate hands. I will try the sandpaper! Thanks.

I believe the TRP's come with 20LPI checkering.

I have a stock TRP and it can be a bit off-putting at first. But I got used to it. I bought a professional that had been sent to SA Custom Shop for defanging and refinishing. It came out nice as well. I have a friend that puts a strip if thin rubber around the front strap and secures it under the grips.

If you know you are going to refinish, I would try bead blasting first. I think that would knock the edges off more consistently than you probably can with sand paper.

I love the bite from that gun. Maybe I'm just a masochist.

If the gun is a stainless model, then you can use sanding cloth on the front strap to knock the peaks off the checkering, then bead blast to match the finish. If it's an armory coat model then you'll have to refinish the gun afterwards, my suggestion would be to just get used to it, or get grips that have a degree of roughness to them as well so that the front strap by comparison does not feel so sharp.

I have the Larry Davison XS Shredders on my TRP and you don't even notice the front strap checkering.

Thank you for your post as I was going to post,,, toughen up cause the 1911 is a mans gun. Your post saved me from having to sound harsh as we live in a kinder and gentler world!
