Did you test function again and look for hammer abstructions like the recoil spring?

We need close ups of the front and rear. You see it in person, does it look beat up? The front looks a little peened. It doesnt take much because its a floating pin the length is crucial also the primers are extra hard.

For fun lets eyeball the HS. Lock the bolt up and have the rear pointing towards 3 oclock then push the bolt sideways it should go past 230 or 330 either way.
bolt face is clean? FP channel cleaned? It could be a few small probs compunded that causing this. Weak hammer spring, peened FP and dirty bolt. You need to do some trouble shooting also since its front of you.

thanks for all the help! the bolt and firing pin were very dirty. I've given them a good acetone soak and clean. One thing I did notice was the movement of the firing pin inside the bolt, it seems to have a lot more freedom.

Anyway, I will try my best to get out this sunday and give it a shot. Hopefully the cleaning did the trick. If not, well, then I'll ask my friend to come along and start swapping known working parts from his rifle like the springs and what not.

Wait, did you grind or file on the hammer if you did then the angle may be off. Resulting in the top of the hammer hitting first then leaving a gap where the fp hits the hammer.

nope. not at all. but I will check later to see if the hammer hits the fp flat, or at a good angle.

I have had ceed ramp issues with a 74. It fired from the right side of the magazine fine
The left side was the problem

The incorrect angle of the feed ramp was too high and resulted in the bolt not closing 100%

this gave light strikes or no strike if the bolt was out of battery

Hand cycling does not give the same feedback as live fire

But hand cycling- pulling bolt to the rear and releasing- will let you inspect the bullet to see if the marks on the bullet and casing are the same for the rounds fed from the right and the left are the same

I am curious to find out the answer to your dilema

Nodak Spud has AK pre-firing function test instructions on their web site. Would be a good starting point.

Sorry, I didn't really know what to look for when I was at the range. I didn't think it was a head space issue since the gun did go off most of the time. And I'd rather not try anything with a live round at home. It'll have to wait til I get the gauges or range trip.

Just one dowel pin holds the firing pin in place. Pop it out so you can play with ammo without worrying about it going off. (take out firing pin)

Basically, the bolt carrier wont be snug up against the front trunnion (where the base of the barrel is housed)

just a guess with ak problems like that, haven't seen all the posts but I had a little problems with a romy ak battery and I think it was due to the rails not being properly aligned.

I still dont like how loose your coils are on your hammer. Look at the first picture up top, notice how tight the coils are. Thats what Im used to seeing.

I tried pushing the coils closer together, and it still looks the same.

I'm gonna try my best to sneak out for a bit on sunday and shoot the darn thing. if the same problem is still here, I'll take better note and refer back to this thread. Will keep an eye on the springs and feed ramp.

Hopefully, cleaning took care of the problem. If it's a headspace issue, I have a no-go (CIP) gauge on order from Brownell.
