80% AR lower question

I've been thinking on building an AR and seeing this 80% lower stuff I finally looked into it. To my shock and joy I had no idea you could buy a hunk of nearly complete metal and turn it into a legal lower. It seams their are quite a few vendors out there and it would almost be silly to ask "who has the best..etc" so after looking around I found this Colfax Tactical http://www.colfaxtactical.com/ar15.htm and it sounds really high quality. Any imput from the peanut gallery is welcome and I would love to be in on a build party but I live in the San Gabriel Valley.

All good choices in the 80% market. I prefer tactical machining from a product standpoint and their service is top notch. I have their jigs so it probably skews my decision a little. I have done some QD lowers and they are nice.

You're doing good by checking to see what jig fits what. I have to do a little shimming when cutting a QD lower in a TM jig, but it works fine.

I know colfax sells a jig for $99. I will look into the others mentioned.
I think a group buy and some one with a jig is my best option... I don't know... Need to look into it more.

Billet can be neat but there is nothing wrong with forged.

If you aren't going with a billet upper, I prefer a forged lower.

Some billet receivers include integrated trigger guards and set screw bolt hold open instead of roll pinned. If you like those features and can find a jig that will hold it for machining, it is nice but it's a matter of taste.

I will always go with pre-anodized 80% lowers, it can be hard to find a plating shop with an FFL that can type II anodize after you complete the lower. A paint on coating can protect the bare aluminum in the FCG pocket.

Yeah but doesn't that lower have a serial number??? Also, I don't know if it would be a major headache if I ever have an encounter with LE and try to explain the US government stamp..

The Colfax lowers are heat treated forged and for an extra $10 anodized..

Not trying to push this brand but it does offer what appears high quality lowers and jigs...
