    Mag Rebuild Question

    Hello to all,

I have some very old 30 round AR mags. I would like to rebuild them with P-Mag bodies. It is my understanding that you need to retain some of the original magazine. I was wondering if the magazine springs from a P Mag are the same as a traditional AR mag?

    Thanks for any help,

    Matt

Why do you need to retain some of the original magazine?

IMPOGO (in my pissed off german opinion) and INAA (I'm not an attorney)
You are not required to retain anything. Rebuild kits are sold as a complete kit with every part included.

The law on Hi cap mags reads as follows

Possession of large capacity magazines, whether by peace officers or private citizens, is not controlled.

In my calm but concerned opinion, you do have to rebuild old magazines and use at least one old part before you can swap out the one old part for new.

To answer the question, Pmag springs are compatible with USGI 20 and 30 round magazines so the path to a legal 100% new magazine rebuild is clear (and I've done it).

When there is a legal way to do things, always go out of your way to 100% comply with the law. This means that "large capacity" magazines which did not exist before the ban are very shaky as things stand right now.

Things may change soon but make sure that any magazine you rebuild remains legal. That means you should know exactly how you legally acquired it and then keep it to yourself (tell your lawyer if you have to).

Well based on the Federal Definition of Manufacture as it applies to firearms and the fact that California uses the same definition in it firearms laws. Assembling a magazine from parts is assembly not manufacturing. and Assembly is not mentioned in the PC Only manufacturing and selling or attempting to sell.

Either way do only what you feel comfortable with.
I personally have no issue with buying a full kit and assembling it. If it should ever come down to it I will use their own rules against themselves.

Site the recognized definition of Manufacturing.

Then site the recognized definition of assembly

Old mags were purchased in CA in 1993. I was manager of a gun store at the time. I think I will retain the springs that are in them as they are relatively new. I will also retain the old mag bodies. Thanks for all the help guys.

There is no reason to do that.

Also, owning or possessing a hi cap magazine is perfectly legal and there is no PC (Penal Code) or PC (probably cause) to arrest you for owning a hi cap magazine. Under what pretense would a LEO arrest you? As long as you follow the law (and learn not to talk about anything) you are good to go.

I don't believe you get my point.

Let's say you want a Pmag, you should be thinking "I will rebuild one of my legally owned pre-ban large capacity magazines, swap everything except the spring and then swap the spring and when I'm done throw out the used parts"

I can't speak more plainly than that but that should be your exact thought, then don't tell anyone that except your lawyer.

For other magazines you need to think similar thoughts.

Never own a magazine if you don't "know" exactly how it is legal.

These sorts of thoughts must be plausible, that's all.

If they are not, you might get in to trouble that your lawyer can not get you out of.
