They might have been castings.
The castings look machined because they have magwells, but that's just how they are cast.Randall Rausch

Ok, when I mentioned piston uppers I was thinking ZM or Oly with no buffer or tube. I time all my lowers at 9 o'clock for the buffer tube threads. The reason for doing this is that the carbine tubes have an extended area to retain the detent.
Too far in or too far out will effect where the tube winds up and how much engagement it has to retain the detent.
If I have time today I'll pull the factory Colt print. I think it's addressed there.07 Class II in the Bay area.

Originally posted by ChrisOMy solar tac grip wrap just slides off if I pull on it... I can tighten it down as much as I can and it will still slide off. I got it for a regular AK PG and it's on a standard romanian bakelite I think PG... What should I do? I kept the mag lock installed just in case this would happen...

I believe the drill Jig that I have for doing AR lowers has alignment threads for properly timing the buffer tap.
(and oly uppers aren't gas piston
they are standard direct impingement with a modified recoil spring setup)

Thanks for the advice. Here is my experience with buffer tube detainer detent timing. The fore/aft location of the detent is not important to the buffer tube threads at all. Its placement is based on the interaction between the bolt carrier and buffer. When the action is closed with the upper the rear of the bolt carrier must push the buffer off the detent pin or else the pin will eat the face of the buffer during firing.
I am well aware of this as I have fixed a couple lowers that people drilled wrong.
The chewing of the buffer face is only one symptom of the pin being too far back.
If the pin is way too far back, you will get bolt bounce and failures to fire.
If you are getting failures to fire on a home-build, I always tell people to just take out the buffer detent and try again.
If that fixes the problem, then the bolt catch hole was drilled too far back.Randall Rausch
