I just ordered a pound of fancy welding rod from Brownells and have begun the task of cleaning up the torch cuts on two receivers.

I should be ready to start welding as soon as the rod gets here.

First up Yugo M64 underfolder (for practice, I don't have a kit).

Then my Polish underfolder.

I will update as work progresses.

ER70S2/6 will work just fine as long as you clean the weld area to raw steel. That is if you have a Tig.

Wash, are you using that nickel steel rod from brownells? Are you planning on blueing/parkerizing it? I don't know that it'll take either with that nickel in there.

The rod from Brownell's is designed to take a nice blue. The nickel is in there to help the rod flow. This rod is for Oxy/Acetylene welding and contrary to what the description says that it will work for tig. It will not work well. As the heat is very different on a tig. O/A rod is made to melt at a lower temp.

I will be TIG welding them.

I want to blue the Polish receiver and since the Yugo M64 is for practice, I want to use the same method.

I recently did two welding projects after a ~9 year break from welding, one press frame made from mostly 1/4" thick wall tube and channel where I set the amps to 185 and floored it, the other a sheet metal engine cover where I used MIG wire for filler, set the amps to 35-45 and pedaled it to fill holes. Both came out satisfactory although I need to work on my rosettes in sheet metal.

I think I've got the welding skill, now I just have to figure out if my idea of the right technique is accurate.

My plan is to use copper bars to back up my welds and extend each piece individually, then trim to fit, bevel the edges and weld them up clamped in alignment.

That probably is going to put more heat in the receiver but hopefully it will reduce the amount of grinding needed on the interior.

If I can do that, heat treat and blue and it comes out nice, I will be happy and start on the Polish.

That's the plan any way.
