It doesn't matter, if you want to paint fill the markings, deeper is probably better.

If you just want cosmetic, it's entirely up to you.

The ATF guidelines are for guns you want to sell. If it's home built, you should not intend to sell, so you can follow that or not.

I recommend sending your 80% lower to this fine calguns supporter before you finish it. That way it saves everybody sooo much hassle....

Thanks for the responses, I wanted to have the Serial# in the event there was a LE at the range that was unclear of the rules regarding a home built. Thanks for the tip on getting it engraved prior to completing the remaining 20%, that was my plan

.005" is the standard depth for .100" height and .003" for less than .080" height .

If you are planning on applying some kind of finish in the future, like Cerakote, Durakote etc, take that into consideration regarding the depth and width because the coatings are usually .001 - .002 thick. So the depth and width of your characters would look reduced.

As this is true, something to consider as well is that even though you are filling an area by .001-.002, you are also raising the surface itself by .001-.002, so in a way it evens out. Is is a concern though, because it doesn't always fill perfectly, and can be thicker in some places.
