SUCCESS!! It...is...alive. Mach took some pics and video while we were out there. I'll post them up in a bit when I get back home. I'm really happy with how thr rifle functioned. It still has occasional hiccups, but it really seems to depend on how you work the action. I get less hangups with every magazine I shoot.

      Awesome write-up Mr. Toes.

I've had my eye on one of these kits for a long time now. Been waiting on a suitably bubba'd donor action. They make the kits for large and small ring Mauser's and for the smle. Did you possibly get a large ring kit (or mix up of small parts) that caused your build challenges?

Might have to blow the dust off my old 25rd .45ACP drums and build one of these too....

Thank you mrlonewolf. I couldn't have even started this without your help.

As promised, here's some pics and vids

Yours truly popping off the first few rounds. You can't see it in the pic, but I'm smiling ear to ear.

Thanks for the offers of butt plates guys, but I think I'll stick to custom fab. I have what would have been a correct one floating around somewhere. When bubba 1.0 cut the stock it changed the angle and relation to the screw holes. I'd have to hack up an original to make it work. The C&R lover in me just can't bring myself to ruin what would otherwise be a good useable original rifle part.

As for the bullet guide r3dn3ck I'm gonna have to say no. It really wouldn't save you much time though. Cutting the basic shape and welding it in was fairly straight forward. Trimming and shaping it once installed however took a couple HOURS with a dremel and a tiny needle file. It's something that really needs to be done with the rifle in hand. file test file test file test....etc.

No it was the small ring kit. I'm pretty sure the only difference in the kits is the threads on the barrel. Most of my issues were because of the spanish mauser being somewhat of a bastard cousin in the mauser family. I'm betting that a 98 pattern rifle would have many less issues.

Not a bad idea. Brass would also give it a touch of old school cool and would probably be easier to join. As I understand it copper is fairly difficult to weld. I might have to give that a shot at some point, but for the time being I'll probably just use steel. I have it sitting around already and am more comfortable working with it.

This is one of the projects im planning on doing in gunsmithing school this year!!! With a Chilean Small ring Mauser EXACTLY like yours. except im going to be doing the bull barrel version and opt for a free floated synthetic stock for weight since its going to be heavy.

For copper or brass, you could silver solder it @ 45 or56% silver @ 1450 degrees f. Or you could use something called stay Brite 8. 8% silver and melts @ 450 degrees or so, like 95/5 but has a super high tensile strength. Instead of migging it. Just a thought. Both are suitable for copper or brass to steel

Copper actually Tig welds pretty nice.

I had to make a copper canoe for an artist's fountain and I got to watch my boss weld it. It didn't seem too hard and the beads were very nice. He didn't even have to fight warping too much which was surprising for curved sheet metal.

On the other hand, I would probably make a copper butt plate by hammering it over a wooden buck. It's soft enough to do that and if you anneal it afterward it should last a long time and not want to crack.
